Tennessee Will Never Be Elite Again

His article is even worse when I read it a second time because he seems to be trying to shield himself from criticism by acting like we might have a "fluke" season or 2. So my guess is he's going to wait and if for whatever reason we take a step back next season or 2 he can still proclaim he was right.

Yeah but he didn't even cover himself well there either by saying we could possibly win the SEC East in a fluke season. He didn't proclaim a playoff birth or title.

Why his take is dumb is he assumes Saban will always be Alabama or they will function like Saban is there after Saban leaves. Same with Georgia and Ohio State.

He assumes other schools can't put together a system like Saban, etc.

It is always a poor assumption.

btw, these national media bros that have been going all in on Tennessee for years don't have such hard feelings towards UT and it's fans due to the Cuonzo or Schiano things. They are arrogant nerds who are mad because fans didn't listen to them because they are a bunch of duded with journalism degrees who vouch for coaches they like; thus, they think their counsel should be heeded. When fans reject their expert opinions, they dig in. When fans are proven right (see Forde's emotional rant the day Cuonzo left, Wolken's Schiano fits, etc), they get even more mad and dig in more, like petulant children. (Ironic since Forde called our fanbase petulant.) This is about their egos and them being exposed as little hacks who get mad when their wokeness and opinions are proven to be utter rubbish..

“Never” is a tough word, but I’m not sure many people disagreed with his take at the time. Glad he was wrong.

I never agreed. I knew the whole mess was due to administrative buffoonery. And that it was only a matter of time before the ship adjusted its ballast and rightened itself.

I'll just leave this article from 2 years ago right here.

First and 10: The truth hurts, but here it is. Tennessee, you will never be elite again

"...this program will never again win like it did in the golden years of Phil Fulmer and Peyton Manning and Tee Martin and Al Wilson. Never."

Meanwhile, I'm in-route to find his Twitter page.
If you've read his latest stuff, it's very complimentary. I don't think there's any need to go pester him about a stale opinion article when he's clearly changed his mind.

Nah, by the tone he used in his article, he deserves it. He's just shifting with the wind now.

If you’re Billy Napier (an assistant under both Saban and Swinney) and you’ve built a strong program at Louisiana, do you really want to be dropped into that mess – or is it more prudent to wait another year for another SEC job to open? Eight of the 14 SEC coaches who began the 2019 season have been fired.

Nah, he just decides to drop into another mess where he's already feeling the heat. Which again, I guess he did wait another year so give the author another half point.

I’ve been thinking about this article a lot lately. I remember posting in the comments that it was a ridiculous take as “never” is a really bad prediction to make. Like the idea that Alabama will “never” be a dumpster fire program again. We cannot predict the future just that we do know fortunes rise and fall.

However, I did not expect our fortunes to rise again so soon.

Lol, here he is slobbering all over Cowboyhat Bennett the 12th's nob:
Hayes: Stetson Bennett vs. Hendon Hooker isn’t nearly the mismatch you think it is

We're doomed, I tells ye. Doomed.

Oh well. Honestly, January of 2021 I probably thought the same.

Oh well, I was dead wrong.

It happens.

In this case though, I am delighted that I was wrong.

A lot of them rely on access. They have Jimmy Sexton in their ear giving them inside details, or in Wolken and Forde’s case, they had our literal AD at the time (Currie) and most famous alumni involved in that search (Peyton feeding Herbstreit info about Schiano being hired). They want inside intel and aren’t about to be bite the hand that feeds them. Currie specifically asked them to have his back because he knew that the fans weren’t going to be happy.

Don't hate me, but we are not an elite program. Elite team sure looks like it, but Tennessee needs a couple of years of sustained success to say the program is elite IMO. You don't have a decade of suck fixed by a cinderella year.

I was going to mention in here but i think it fits with your comment, Our offense is the most dominant unit on either side of the ball in college football this year, that is what allows us to compete with elite teams this year. Going forward we will see an increase in talent because of this success but we still need to show that we can maintain the culture of the program we have built with guys graduating or getting drafted and new leaders and members of the roster

I would be fine if we just, as a collective, agreed to never link articles from SDS or A to Z ever again

In my view, “elite” is defined by overall history and not just recent history. If I’m not mistaken, we are still in the top 10 in all time wins. With our money, facilities and fan base, I submit that UT is an elite program that went through a long drought due to poor administration. Although it was longer than it should have been, it was just a matter of time (and the right hires) before we got back to where we should be. We shall see if it’s fully fixed but I think the combination of the Heupel philosophy, NIL and the transfer portal mesh pretty well. Good players are going to want to play in this program now for several reasons and the future looks bright to me.

Every school has a down period , even Bama. Auburn seems to be the latest to fall on hard times. Today, the transfer portal has changed everything where a down school can get back faster than the old days of hiring a good coach, waiting 4 years for seniors to pull the program up.

This. As much of a circus places like Nebraska, Miami, and Auburn have been I would never say they NEVER will be elite again.
This reminds me a little bit of a cover story that Sports Illustrated ran in 1996, which encouraged the University of Miami to drop their football program, because it had become an embarrassment both on and off the field. Five years later, they had one of the best teams ever, and won the National Championship easily ... and that was Sports Illustrated, not some cheap internet outfit like Saturday Down South.
