Texas coaching search thread

It's surprising to me honestly. I get that money talks, but after reading that article where he talked about how much it crushed him when his coach left, and how he didn't wanna do that to his players, I honestly thought if there was one coach that might stick around it was him.

And I figured that if he did leave, it would be for a job bigger than Texas. I get that Texas is a great school, but I would have seen Shaka waiting for an ACC gig or a blue blood.

That being said, great pickup for Texas. I still feel like in the end, we will be thanking Texas, and I also have a feeling that Texas may regret letting Barnes go. Shaka just went from a school with very little expectations that he exceeded to a school that let a coach go who only missed the NCAA tourney one time in his tenure there.

Shaka must be very very confident. Time will tell.

They won the UT hires

One UT's situation was clearly better than the other UT's situation.

The bright side is, the reason why the one UT's situation is better is now at the other UT to (hopefully) make their situation better.

In a few years, if Barnes truly is still as driven as he says, and if he gives us the same level (or better) of success as he gave Texas, then we would be in the position to be able to have a coach of Smart's caliber. And I'm not sure that we don't anyways.

I think both UT's got a good deal given the situation that they were in. Texas would have rather had Marshall, but they got their #2, and their #2 would be a lot of people's #1.

We are successful just by the fact that we didn't hire a Google Coach, he was a Power 5 coach.

We got what I feel like was the best possible coach for our situation. Texas is getting a great coach, but they still didn't get their first option. I think we got the only guy we actually truly wanted.

Excited about Barnes. He is exactly what we need right now.

Marshall would've been a better hire. Smart will be interesting at Texas. Very interested to see how he recruits there.

It will be interesting to see how and where he recruits. Avery Johnson Sr & Jr have been funneling top in state talent to A&M.

I can't believe Smart left. I thought he was going to make VCU into a powerhouse.

Not 100 percent sure Shaka was that amazing a hire. Look at past VCU coaches. Very little success.

VCU reminds me of Boise in CFB. Very few coaches that have left Boise have seen sustained success. Even Shaka has been bounced out the first weekend of the tournament the last few years.

Time will tell, but I am very satisfied with the Barnes hire. Not completely convinced Texas upgraded.

Smart's halfcourt D/halfcourt O can be very hard to watch. As intriguing of a hire anyone will make this year, at least. Going to be fun to see if he can literally run a game in transition for 40 minutes straight in the Big 12.
