I know we have a month to go on this but I am ready to get some discussion started. I am pulling for Texas in this one, if for no other reason than I am sick of hearing about how great USC is. Also, I think their claimed NC in 2003 was competely bogus. It was obvous that the AP just wanted to make the BCS look bad. I can't say I have followed either of these teams this year but I am interested to hear what everyone thinks.

Scoring per game looks like a push.
Texas - 50.9
USC - 50

Opponent scoring per game, edge to Texas.
Texas - 14.6
USC - 21.3

Yards per game, edge to USC.
Texas - 508.4
USC - 580.3

TEXAS - of the two they are the more complete team - the only thing is whether or not they come to play or are in awe of the whole thing. Don't get me wrong - USC is great but I think Texas is playing more more inspired ball right now and USC is just going through the motions.

USC:

1. They've done it.
2. Leinart is very posed and can beat you with his head and arm.
3. Reggie Bush can break any game open.
4. Better coaching staff.
5. They'll play lose and fast in the game.
6. Mack Brown is a choke artist and will have his team tight.
7. Vince Young is great unless he has to make pocket decisions.
8. Texas hasn't seen anything like what they are about to see.
9. You typically don't get it done your first time around...and Mack Brown has never even won a conference title until this year.

I think the Big 12 is weaker this year then last year.
Texas wasnt really tested this season save Ohio State.
Historically the Big 12 hasn't played well in bowl games as other conferences (i.e. Nebraska).
Leinart and Bush are trying to make NCAA history as the greatest team ever.
USC has been there twice before and wont be tight like Texas.

this is tough...i'd like to say that TX hasn't played anybody, but OSU and i'm not sure they're all that GREAT...good, but not GREAT.

I'll say this, this game will be the best team the other has played all year....I'd like to give TX's D the edge as they are better than any D that USC has played, but TX's D hasn't seen an offense anywhere NEAR what USC's offense is capable of.

For now, i'll have to go with USC based on the "been there done that" factor....though i think TX will NOT be tight...Mack has actually done a very good job this year of keeping this team loose and having fun....

USC.

Texas may 30 points... but I don't see them slowing USC's offense.

Texas big. USC has been nothing near dominant this year (and couldn't have beaten Auburn last). They have yet to play any team that has any semblance of speed on the defensive side of the ball (recall last year's OU team gave up dizzying totals prior to the final). TX has speed on both sides of the ball and has the best defensive line that SC will have seen in about 10 years. The Pac 10 has done nothing to prepare SC to play against a bruising front 7.

Going to argue forever that this USC team would struggle mightily against last years Auburn team and could not beat them in a 5 game series (where presumably turnovers would even out and luck would not factor in).

Texas. USC hasn't a played a team like that in 3 years.

The Longhorns! :dance2: Texas can score just as much as anyone else can. Longhorns have a better defense. I think Texas could play in the PAC 10 and still go undefeated this season. Only Cal, Oregon or UCLA would have given them fits. The Big 12 in most cases are passing teams. In my opinion the PAC 10 is more of a running conference. How would USC or Texas fared in the ACC or SEC?

Will be surprised if either team scores in the mid 40's. We'll see a score like this:

Texas 38
USC 34

or

Texas 41
USC 37

I think USC would have done well...their offense is so much better than any offesne any SEC team played this year, in or out of conf.

But, having said that, USC didn't play a defense in or out of conference that could hold a candle to the types of defenses they'd see week in and week out in the SEC....

end result...USC probably only loses one game with an SEC schedule...they're pretty darn good, and for the most part they take care of the ball...

TX on the other hand...could've lost to Bama, Aub, UGA, LSU, UF on any given weekend...they probably lose 2 games playing in the SEC week in and week out.

I'd probably say the same thing in the ACC...FSU, Va Tech, Miami, Clemson, BC....got some toughies in there now...

And one last note...Neither TX or USC played in a road environment that is consistently as hostile as going to some of the places in the SEC or ACC. Well, maybe TX ...A&M was pretty hostile...and the TX/OK game is always rowdy...USC's only big road tests...ND and Oregon..both good crowds, but you get that every week down here.

Okay. So several of you think that Reggie Bush is the USC key to victory. I agree he is a great back but I am not convinced that he can beat Texas. Texas gives up 124.4 yards per game on the ground. Of course, USC averages 264.3 ypg on the ground against opponents that give up an average of 172.7 ypg (my numbers may be off a little here) on the ground. So USC outrushes its opponents average run defense by 91.6 yards. Let's assume that the Texas run defense and the USC rushing game both perform up to thier averages and USC runs for 216 yards (124.4 + 91.6). Will that be enough to beat the Longhorns? I really don't know.

Incidentally, I think my rushing estimate is pretty good here because Texas' opponents have a combined rushing average of 174.4 ypg. So, on average, Texas holds its opponenets to 50 yards below their usual rushing numbers. Take USC's avg. of 264.3 ypg and subtract 50 = 214.3. Pretty close to 216 huh? Numbers can be so cool.

i know yall all want texas to win...hell so do i. but reggie bush is a game changer. he can take over like no one i have ever seen.

vince young is to erratic with his throws and usc's defense is not the best but is definetly one of the fastest in the nation. they will get to young and slow him down.

usc 45

texas 30

i do not want TX to win...can't stomach mack brown and national champion in the same breath....plus, as much as i don't like the Pac 10, USC is darn good, and it would be cool to see them do something that no one has ever done....

I like Texas in this one. They won in Ohio and have shown they are solid at every position. They have the best O line I've seen, and very underatted defensive backs. The danger here for Texas isn't USC...it's getting in their heads it isn't just another football game, they avoid that they'll win.

yeah here is two more, willis mcgahee. Remember when everyone thought miami was going to take out ohiostate cause they had been there the year before and had a great running back in willis mcgahee and the best team in college history. remember what happen to willis and remember what happen in the game? dont base your answer on one person, cause anyone could drop at anypoint and time. with that being said i want to go with texas, but then again i want to go with usc. i will be rooting for texas, as will most, but i dont know who is going to win, seems way to close to call.

I can't stand either team. I really hate USC! They do have a great offense, but they have no defense what so ever. I believe they have given up 25+avg a game. USC has not played a team in 3 years with a defense half as ggod as the 4th or 5th ranked defenses of the SEC. Of course they have Bush, he will be a big factor. Texas played a cream puff team in the Big 12 champ game. Heck Colorado barely had a better record then our beloved Vols. I think texas didn't have exactly a hard season. Neither team played a schedule half as tough as the VOLS did. Hell I don't think a team in the nation played a tougher season then the vols, but thats anouther subject. I have to put my money on the other UT!

you got it CBC...that's a hell of an offense....i just haven't seen an offense that balanced in a long, long time....they can beat you any way they want to, and the killer is, you decide how your death is going to occur....

you want to stop the run? Fine. here's DJ and SS and ML.

you want to stop the pass? fine. Here's RB and LW.

you want to do both, but you know you can't....

If TX does, kudos to them, cause i don't think they can stop 'em enough....
