Texas reached out to Rick Barnes

Who cares if they call! Last week at this time, a lot of people on this message board (including me) thought it was time to bring in a younger coach. If we get beat Thursday, you will hear the same thing again. I think Rick is a good guy and a good but not great coach. If he wants to go back to Texas or any other team in the country, so be it. We have an athletic director that will go out and get us another great coach. Tennessee has proven the last 20 years that the basketball program here in Knoxville is a top 10-15 destination job. Any proven coach can come in here and win. It takes players and a little luck to win it all. I could care less if Texas calls coach Barnes. If he doesn’t want to coach Tennessee, someone with a proven record will. GO VOLS!!!

I doubt this story is true.

Rick would NEVER take that job away from Rodney Terry. And anyone with half a brain knows that.

It would not shock me if they called Rick just to ask questions in regards to Terry. And I’m sure Rick said they should hire him (and they ultimately will)

The Brad Stevens part is the other thing that makes me think this is made up. Brad Stevens is the GM of the Boston Celtics. Do I need to elaborate more than that?
I frequently issue the old axiom “coaches coach” and it proves out with the Belichicks and Boeheims of the world. They have to be dragged kicking and screaming away from that world, while other excellent coaches like Chris Petersen and Brad Stevens move on.

Was Chris Mack proven when he went to Louisville?
Billy G when he went to Kentucky? Kermit Davis at Ole Miss?
How did Ben Howland do at Mississippi State?
What about Tom Crean at Georgia?
Avery Johnson at Bama?
Was Shaka Smart proven when he went to Texas?
Kevin Stallings at Pitt?
Tubby Smith at Minnesota or Memphis ?
Did any of these guys fare better at their these new jobs than previous jobs?
It’s not as easy as you think. First off, what’s your definition of “proven head coach?” Secondly, why do you assume they’d get the exact results here? There are very few coaches who can just take multiple schools to Sweet 16’s, much less final 4’s. There are very few coaches UT could hire that would be a slam dunk. There is no guarantee Jay Wright would come here and do better. There is a chance you could strike gold , but your insinuation that UT could hire a guy with a good track record and be assured of greater success, is flawed.

If Terry doesn’t get the Texas job, I’m sure he can get another head coaching job. He did well at Fresno and ok at UTEP. But if Gainey leaves and Terry doesn’t, would Rick ask for big money to hire him? Obviously fun to speculate.

Exactly right. This is why Rick Pitino is such a great coach. He’s one of the few coaches who can just go anywhere and win big.

SERIOUSLY doubt this happens because I can’t imagine Terry not being a head coach somewhere next year. But if the opportunity were to be there, if I’m Barnes, I’d see about bringing him in as a Head Coach In Waiting, like what some football coaches have arranged.

Bingo.Coaches that usually win 25 a year aren’t exactly all over the place. We see schools constantly making coaching changes only to find out it’s not that easy. For most of my life , UT has been one of them. I don’t want to go back to hire j proven coaches or even guys that may have put together a couple good season at P5 jobs. I’ll ride with the established Hall of Famer .

Sorry. Barnes is a GREAT coach , just not in March. Most of us are hoping this is the year he stomps the MONKEY so we can get on with the SHOW.

As a lifetime texas hater, I hope everyone decent turns them down. As much as Barnes might want to help a former assistant, he shouldn't be helping a very soon conference rival. All of the SEC will soon learn that the self-importance and arrogance of texas and its fans knows no bounds and is unmatched.

Deal with them for a few years in the conference and wishing for their failure and demise will become the norm.

Lon Kruger is a HOF coach who many think overstayed his time at Oklahoma. They then went out and got a coach in Porter Moser whose teams placed an average of 6th place in their conference over his career. He did take a team to the final 4 and another to the 16, but has been very inconsistent at OU.

Finding a gem like Barnes is difficult. texas was stupid to let him go and Tennessee was smart to get him.

You guys are taking me all wrong. All I am saying is if Barnes doesn’t want to be here, who cares. Do we all remember when he flirted with UCLA. In fact, he would have been gone if UCLA would have agreed to pay his buyout to UT. All I’m saying is I want a coach that wants to be at UT. And if Barnes doesn’t want to be here, then our AD will find someone proven to take this program forward. Geez y’all are a tough group!! LOL. Go Vols.

Barnes almost left for the UCLA job

Nothing would surprise me as desperate as Texas is at the moment to make a splash.

They are about to cover the beard issue with a huge pay day to somebody

IMO they go heavily after jay wright

Can’t imagine any scenario that see them going after Barnes and I doubt this report is true. I’d guess it was a call about other candidates such as the interim. I do think he misses his family in Texas but there is no way of this happening. He’s probably coaching 5 more years at most, I’d guess, why make any change?

I’m old enough to remember UT hiring lots of guys to take the program forward in the past, with only 2 succeeding.
