Texas Shake-up

I'm no Texas fan, but I really liked Applewhite as a player. He was always having to come off the bench and save the day. Still puzzles me why they benched him for Simms. Good to see Applewhite get the last laugh. I agree with other posters. Will have no effect on our recruiting. There have been exceptions, but we don't usually do well there.

Applewhite is not going to be the new OC.

They went away from the zone read because Gilbert can't run.

They've been weak in the trenches for years.

Greg Davis despite all of his success is not well suited for running a pro-style offense.

He essentially recruited himself out of a job by bringing in pro-style QBs the last few years.

Applewhite was fun to watch and a clutch player in college. He did very well as the offensive coordinator for Rice, when they went to a bowl game a couple years ago. Texas would be a major challenge, but he has a lot of support to take over the reigns, because many people thought he instead of Muschamp would be the coach in waiting at Texas.

Not sure what Texas team you have been watching the past few years. Gilbert can run, he is surprisingly fast by an objective reasonable persons viewpoint. Look at his numbers, when he actually runs the ball and isn't sacked. He had multiple gains for over 15 yards running the football. He is definitely faster than any QB Tennessee has had since Tee Martin. The problem with Gilbert is he takes way too much time in the pocket and Texas also started 2-3 fr on their o-line this year. Texas has not been weak in the trenches for years? They have multiple starting defensive and offensive linemen in the NFL. They have had first and second team All-Americans on their d-line and o-line the past few years. Additionally, another problem with Texas is they don't have a reliable running back (until Malcolm Brown next year), or experienced offensive line. Mack Brown and the recruiting coordinator should have been responsibility for having a decent running back, which they really haven't had in the past 2 years, or since Jamaal Charles left. They also should have been responsible for getting top-notch offensive lines since they have had top 5 recruiting classes the past 5 years plus including solid offensive lineman in each class.

The point is it's absolutely ridiculous for Davis to have been fired and other people on Texas' staff (Mack Brown) should have taken more responsibility and stepped up and retained their staff.

Good post, if Gilbert calms down he can be a great qb, and hopefully Malcom Brown lives up to the hype.
