Texas Tech Job Open

I would be very disappointed if Tech pulled the trigger on Art Briles. Anyone deserves a second chance...look at Hugh Freeze at Liberty. My one concern with Briles is that he has never admitted he made a mistake, or acknowledged he was part of what went down at Baylor. He's a heckuva coach, but he needs to 'own his stuff.' All in my opinion.

We don't know IF there were or were not private conversations to that effect. Maybe he's not one for the public stuff like that. I think maybe those that publicize their "apologies and ownership" too soon seem fake. If Tech actually performs notable due diligence, and if they find him acceptable now, then that's their business. And by notable, I mean setting up a serious one on one that is not an interview. you can only find out where a man is in this if you talk to the man. Probably wouldn't have to get too long into the discussion to see where his mind is at.

Sources: Texas Tech to name Baylor associate head coach and outside linebackers coach, Joey McGuire. He has never been a head coach or a coordinator at the college level. “Tech will be banking on his people skills — his popularity and connections with Texas high school coaches to improve the Red Raiders' recruiting and his reputation for being a players' coach to help build a successful culture.”

A Big 12 school hiring a defensive position coach. Crazy or thinking outside the box.

Sounds like a Shane Beamer-type of hire. It seems like these types of outside the box hires either go really great or really poorly, which if you're Texas Tech is a strategy worth pursuing.

It’s worked somewhat well for Arkansas.

I wish him well, but he has no connection to West Texas, and to me that would have been key to their hire. He has spent his entire career in the DFW area, and lately in Central Texas. That said, he rocked it at Cedar Hill, and obviously he's under Aranda, so he's got a great pedigree. I truly hope he succeeds on the High Plains.

Sam Pittman as well. I’ve always thought that ignoring position coaches was a terrible mistake. There are a ton of guys who have attributes to be a successful head coach who never get an opportunity because they never reached the exalted position of coordinator.

That hire sounds like a gamble when they have to go up against Texas and Texas A&M for big time in state recruits.

I'm sure it's happened, but I can't ever remember a football recruit deciding between A&M and Tech and opting for Tech. Now if we're talking Basketball or Baseball, that's a completely different story.

McGuire has always been a CEO type coach dating back to Cedar Hill. Suppose he hires Graham Harrell and Gary Patterson as coordinators. Tech would suddenly have more recruiting stroke than they have had since the Spike Dyke days. Harrell's dad and McGuire still have major pull with HS coaches around the state. Patterson speaks for himself.

I could also see the situation going like this too:

Texas Tech had an NFL MVP at QB and the current front runner for NFL Coach of the Year at HC, at the same time, and they still couldn't compete for the Big 12.

McGuire should concentrate on putting together a staff and also recruiting. Let Cumbie finish out the season like Baylor did with Jim Grobe. That seemed to work out ok.

Didnt the NCAA declare him clean of any violations? At least that is what his attorney said. If I were a Texas school not named Longhorns or Aggies, I'd hire him in a second. Those schools are gonna need all of the excitement around their program they can muster in the next several years and Briles can bring it.

Cedar Hill is where Salter went to high school.........
McGuire was the HC there forever until he stepped up to the college ranks. McGuire coached them to their first ever playoff win and won 3 of the 4 state championship games he coached them to.

Joey McGuire signed a six-year, $20.2 million deal to be Texas Tech's head football coach, a Texas Tech official confirmed Tuesday.
The contract averages out to a $3.37 million annual salary.
In year one of his deal, McGuire will get $3 million, per Texas Tech. He is eligible to receive up to $1 million annually in bonuses.

Texas Tech also paid $250,000 that will go to Baylor to buy out McGuire's contract there.
McGuire's contract includes a salary pool of $4.8 million to spend on his 10 assistant coaches and $1.85 million for his strength and support staff, a Tech official said.
