Texas wanting OU game locked in at 2:30

Meh, game hasn't been the same since they moved it from high noon anyway. Once tradition was thrown away for money, the luster was kinda lost.

Just because you request something doesn’t mean you will receive it. But looking at the schedule this year, the SEC slate isn’t that great the week of Texas-Oklahoma. There are some decent matchups but nothing that usurps that game imo. Depending on how they line up the 2024 schedule they could make it work but the OG SEC members may not be pleased with the public perception of the conference acquiescing to the new kids.

They just want the same billing as Florida vs UGA in Jax. I’m not sure if ABC/ESPN will go ahead and lock in the Cocktail party the way that CBS has the past decade or so. I don’t have a problem w/ them wanting that slot, but making that public w/ a reputation that already precedes you kind of pisses me off.

There is a wildcard here. The schedules for every team are about to put into a blender when they figure out the rotations. I don't think you can say at this point that TX-OU will be the marquee game that weekend.

that time slot is the preferred slot for fans that attend games in every stadium except LSU. Last year, that game was vs two 3-2 teams that ended 49-0 while the SEC that same saturday had 3 undefeated top ten teams playing major conference rivals (Ga/Aub, TN/LSU, Ala/A&M).

I dont mind it being considered a major rival & most years worthy of that slot but locking it in is over the top. Hell, its been at 11 am for years with ABC and now Fox,

I think it depends on what is now considered the marquee game time by ABC/ESPN. Imo the SEC game of the week should be at 7/8pm on ABC. Recently Fox put their dumbass Big Noon Kickoff as the GOTW. It has gotten huge #’s, but it’s deprived fans all across college football the spectacle of a Penn State Whiteout vs Ohio State or Ohio State hosting Oregon at night etc…CBS has always had 1 primetime game, which has mainly been Bama vs LSU or aTm for the last decade. (Holding out hope we get that primetime spot in Bryant Denny this year.)

I expect ABC to fully embrace the best SEC game to be a night game to give the fans something we really haven’t experienced week in and week out . All that to say, Sankey will probably embrace the new tradition of the Cotton Bowl and the Texas State fair for an afternoon spot.

The SEC will do what the people paying them $$$s in form of a media distribution contract tell them to do.

it’s all about ratings which brings in the $$$s to pay the schools. No one else’s wishes matter.

IMO it absurd for ANY game to be played at 11A local time, but OU vs Tx shouldn’t be guaranteed a time slot either.

If it’s the best game then it should get the preferred time slot. If it’s 2nd best, then that. Otherwise it falls like all others have. It’s been awhile but I’ve seen Tenn-Fla, & Ga games start at 11 CDT.

I agree. I don’t think Texas/OUshould get preferred treatment, but I do think that CBS has given preferred status to the UGA vs Florida series over the years, even when that game had no business being the 3:30 GOTW. I think back in the early 2000’s it was a night game once, but now it’s one of the few that is scheduled before the season starts, along w/ the primetime game and a few of the doubleheaders. I wouldn’t be surprised if a big spectacle isn’t made of the first Red River Shootout of the SEC. It’s a national game, Sankey will definitely be there. I’m guessing it will get GOTW recognition, assuming both teams aren’t below .500.

They will be demanding the SEC championship game be moved to Dallas soon enough and we'll probably have to play them there, knowing our luck.

This doesn't bother me in the slightest. The Red River Shootout is one of the biggest rivalry games in college football, and is over 100 years old at this point. That game is on the same level as Tennessee-Alabama, Alabama-Auburn, etc. It makes sense to treat it similarly to those other rivalry games. It makes perfect sense to consider it for the 3:30 slot, and show some preference for it unless there's a concrete reason to do otherwise. (Sort of like how Tennessee-Alabama has gotten the 3:30 slot in a lot of recent years, even when it's been utterly uncompetitive).

I think the lack of luster had more to do with Texas sucking a bunch of years.

TX working early to destroy the SEC like it has every other conference it's been in.
They'll just keep pounding their head into a brick wall, because they will not run the SEC.

They reason they ran the SWC and the Big 12 is because they were by far the biggest fish in a relatively smaller pond. That isn't the case now. They are one of many big players now, not the hegemon of the conference.

IMO, the most fascinating thing about them entering the SEC will be watching their fans, admin, etc. handle the cultural adjustment. They are used to belonging to a group where they can throw their weight around and get whatever they want, but will not be starting next year. They'll have to get in line and work within the channels of the system, and they might not handle that well. It'll be hilarious to watch if they don't.

Is the marquee game even going to be the 3:30 timeslot by then? The SEC will have moved on from CBS by that point and working along ESPN’s Saturday airing timetable.
