Pitchers and catchers begin reporting today. It couldn't have come soon enough.

My earliest predictions:

AL East- Red Sox
AL Central- Tigers
AL West- Angels
Wild Card- Indians

NL East- Mets
NL Central- Cardinals
NL West- Padres
NL Wild Card- Phillies

WS- Angels over Mets

I'm very worried about the Red Sox pitching, but Josh Beckett should save them from any prolonged losing streaks. I really like the Tigers pitching. Adding Cabrera and Renteria will really help them offensively as well. The Angels though in my mind will be the class of the AL this year if they can finally avoid the injury bug.

In the NL, Santana is a HUGE boost to the Mets. The Cardinals will rebound from their dismal start last year and will simply beat up on NL Central opponents. I wouldn't be surprised if the Phillies wind up topping the Mets, but someone had to start a prediction thread and I'm going with Santana. The NL West might turn out worse than the NL Central. The Giants stink, the Dodgers are the Dodgers, and I don't see enough consistency in the DBacks. Feel free to add your picks.

I'll go with Philly topping the Mets and the Mets as a wildcard team (for the sake of arguement)

Everything else I agree with.

No way any division will turn out worse than the NL Central. I got the Cubs this year in the Central and the DBacks in the West again.

I think it will be a 3-way race for second in the Central with the Cards, Brewers, and Reds with the Brewers winning by a game or 2.

Also got the Tigers over the Mets in the WS right now.

The Tigers look scary good on paper until you get to the bottom of the ninth in a close game. Todd Jones is not Joel Zumaya. The Tigers season hinges on how and when Zumaya comes back.

I call shenanigans on anyone saying the Reds will have a successful season.
The Reds might be a game or 2 better than last year but not anything that I would call successful. They will be more talented as a whole but have a couple of holes in the rotation and will be relying on to many rookies to have a season of any significance.

until the Brewers do something about their pitching, my vote stays with the Cards. The Cubs will be a major letdown this year IMO.

The Cubs won it last year and have only gotten better IMO. I would love for you to be right so I can see them fall flat on their face. I just think they are a lot more talented than anyone else in the Central.

i hate this cliche, but the Cubs won because no one else tried in the last half of the season aside from the Cards, but they started out so craptasticly awful that it didn't matter. I really do predict the Cubs to fall flat on their face. They had very solid pitching last year, which is kind of a surprise given the names accredited to that pitching. i don't think they can put those same numbers up this year and I don't see their offense making up the difference.

THE BRAVES ARE ALL THE WAY BACK, BABY! By which I mean, winning the division and flaming out in the first round. CHOP CHOP CHOP!

(I don't have any serious predictions yet, obviously. Although I'm definitely not willing to concede the division to the Mets yet.)

It doesn't matter if you aren't willing to concede the division to the Mets. The Phillies will be happy to take it. Both teams are better than the Braves right now. Has Kotsay injured himself yet? :eek:hmy:

Fortunately Kotsay doesn't matter at all. Unless Bobby falls in love with him in spring training, of course, and gives him 300 ABs before seeing the light.

I honestly don't think there are four or five games' worth of difference between the Mets, the Phillies, and the Braves right now. I could construct an argument for any of them. It's likely to come down to injuries, fluke games, etc. etc.

Maybe more wishful thinking than anything else but.....The Yankees won't make the playoffs this year setting up a media frenzy about the Steinbrenner family and so on and forth.
