Not everyone will agree but Coach Dooley did leave our program in better shape when he took it over. No one wanted the job because of the mess it was in and he took he job when others would not. No his results were not up to the standards the vol nation expects or deserves but he is leaving us in better shape. For that Coach I do want to say thanks for your efforts.

I agree that we're in better shape. I laugh at the notion that nobody else would've taken the job.

I have never in my life seen such an outpouring for a coach that did so little with the time he had here. What kind of spell does Dooley have you guys under? The "bless his heart" crowd really needs to take a step back, look at things a little closer, and really think about what you're saying.

Phillip Fulmer, the guy who had a career 152-52 record, had 5 SEC championship game appearances, won 2 SEC championships and 1 National Championship did not receive this amount of gratitude from the fan base when he was fired.

Also I'm so sick and tired of hearing about Dooley inheriting a bad situation. Do you think James Franklin inherited a better situation at Vanderbilt? What about Bill O'Brien at Penn State? I mean come on folks! Stop making excuses.

Actually didn't Sumlin want the job?

Also we just got the brakes beat off us by Vanderbilt. We are 0-6 in SEC play this year. So not sure we are in
"better shape".

Agreed. It is the "everykid needs a trophy for trying" policy that everyone loves these days.

Words come out that a few people wanted the job. But Hamilton was a tard and picked Dools. What has Dools really done for the program? I don't exactly call our only hope of an SEC win (Kentucky) being in "better shape."

Thank you Coach Dooley for that exciting Troy game. It was definitely the most exciting game i've ever attended in my four years at this university and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! Really got my moneys worth that day.

I'm gonna agree to disagree with you that we're in better shape. 3 losing seasons in a row does not bode well for the "we're in better shape" argument.
Getting rid of Hamilton makes us in better shape but Dooley didn't make that improvement.
I guess our players know how to shower better. I'll give you that one.

We are in much better shape NCAA rules wise. Players aren't thugs and are contributing. Thanks for not running us in the ground Dool's, just wish you had been the answer in the "W" column as well. Good luck and land somewhere making a lot of dough so UT doesn't have to pay all that buy out.

Losing in a manner that sets new records for futility for our program in no way means that we are better off than we were 3 years ago. Anytime a coach leaves or is fired, there is a mess to clean up, and Dools certainly left his.

Exactly. It's rare that a coach gets fired if things are going well. Petrino like actions are the exception.

For all of you people that can't call coach Dooley by his name need to get a life. How childish can one be? Simpletons abound on this board.

We are not in better shape. If anything, we have taken a backwards slide. Open your eyes. The guy may be a wonderful human being, but he is a terrible head football coach. Saying so does not make you a terrible person.

What's wrong with Dools? Guess you oppose Gruden's nickname Chucky too? What about Pig? Would you like for us to address him as Alton? Grow up.

I couldn't agree more. If you miss Dooley so much, pack up and go with him. He did nothing for this program. Do you hear me, nothing. Kiffen sucked but he won more Sec games in the one year he was here than Dooley did in three and Dooley had better talent. He gave us our first loss to Ky in 30 yrs our first loss to Vandy in 30 yrs. our worse Three year SEC record in the history of the school our worst losing record since 1909. The worst defense in school history and currently has us 12 in the SEC in recruiting. So things are not better! And were not getting better. As the matter of a fact, the were getting worse. He did much better in his first year than the following two. Numbers don't lie. Glad he is gone. He gained absolutely no respect because during this historical record breaking lows, Dooley dodged any opportunity to take responsibility for the situation and instead he choose to throw these 19 year old kids under the bus. Ecstatic he is gone, don and won't miss him he just didn't leave soon enough!

OP has some valid points. As with anything, there are grey areas. The health of a program is not strictly based on W-L record. No matter how you slice it, Dooley and his family are real, live human beings, with emotions. They aren't robots. Just because our W-L record isn't what we want, it doesn't mean he is a bad person, a jerk, an a** hole, etc. I think we SHOULD thank him for working his tail off for this program, and at the same time, tell him goodbye. Very few people argue with the idea that Dooley's outcome is unacceptable, but that's no reason to act like he's a piece of crap.
