Actually, I don't find that motive completely unbelievable. Obviously there is an underlying pathology or two, but I could see how a fabulist might try to up his value in this manner.

By law, faking a hate crime is not a hate crime in and of itself. I'm not entirely sure that Smollett's camp is pushing the salary story. That info could have come from the brothers. I would think Smollett's people would try to come up with a story about alcohol or mental health issues.
