Not sure I follow "in the plane of the wall". This where our structure classes for dummy's let's me down. I thought by its nature overturning was out of plane?
In extreme cases (like the one with the storm shelter) the shear walls need to be checked for overturning in plane because that's the direction in which they are resisting shear from lateral forces. That's all that calculation I posted is. It is an overturning check for a shear wall in plane subjected to insane wind loads.
