That's racist!

The argument in the article is basically that WMT should eat the losses because they make money at other stores so they can afford to lose in these areas. I think it's interesting for someone to claim this is apartheid while also expecting the racists to provide them subsidized food. If white people won't feed you, create your own grocery and then you don't have to worry about the man anymore.

For the record WMT doesn't gaf what color you are. You don't earn half a trillion in revenue by being elitist. They will take anyone's money and as long as a store is making its numbers it will stay open forever.

They pull similar s**t with “affordable housing”. A subdivision with $500k homes “has” to have a few homes that take $300 rent vouchers.

this is something my work struggles with. trying to help citys keep them open. lax taxes, favorable parking, installing the undergrounds, zoning variances so on and so forth.

if a store isn't profitable what are they supposed to do?

I would honestly like to hear from the liberal side about their ideas, and if this is a problem that can/should be big government fixed? @luthervol @lawgator1

The issue isn't simply whether to support a business in a low income area. This is obviously very much affected by Covid, which has had a disproportionate impact on such areas, anyway.

It's a tough issue and I don't know of any simple solution. I do respect and support the efforts made by your work and I also think there is a role for local, state, and federal governments to play.

Ok..

Pussification is increasing at an exponential rate.

So damn ridiculous. Meaning "sane people should and do make fun of this...ridicule it". The sneetches is a lesson in equality, love for our neighbors, and materialism in "keeping up with the joneses(star bellies etc)".... all rhis racism against white folks and constant bullsheit from every angle is and will backfire. Keep driving that wedge ..

Apartments too...even though its gated and super nice looking with 1BR units running $1200 a month, X amount of units have to be Sec8 and rent for a couple hundred for the same units in order to get approval to build it . Lucky bastards getting a free apt while everyone else gets robbed....

Sorry guys, gonna need to suspend sports until racial inequities are fixed. Just think how many Christian McCaffreys werent given a shot because they were passed over for a black RB due to bias

I was upset when the Panthers drafted him because i know foot ball and thought he wouldnt cut it in the pros. He led the NFL in receptions ( WR also) and ran for over 1000 yds....he is like Kamara on steroids. Easily top 3 RB on earth....until he got hurt last year, he was the highest scoring player in Fantasy FB every year. Until last season when he fractured his leg, he had AVERAGED about 1000yds rushing and almost 100 catches per season. That is insane. He is a beast

My favorite thing my city did was:
1) seized several properties in the 'bad' part of town that were behind on taxes
2) invested millions in fixing them up
3) made the houses on those properties 'affordable' according to their perspective ($1k+/month in a neighborhood with average rents around $300/month)
4) changed the micro-market in that neighborhood in such a way to drive rents up in the neighborhood, forcing out nearly everyone that lived there before

The real estate investors and developers make a killing in those scams. Grants, 0% loans, skim material and labor costs, tax forgiveness on property and income after refurb. Immediate appreciation in value and rent increases.

I'm jealous.

It's killed our downtown. The apartments in our downtown are close to DC-level rents. It's an economics thing that our government doesn't get- when they hand developers buildings for $1 and give a 10+ year tax break, tying it only to a promise from the developer for a cool million in redevelopment (most ends up spent on admin costs, of course) then those developers have zero incentive to fill their apartments to max capacity. When you actually talk to realtors around here most of our downtown apartment buildings are at about 40%-60% capacity, creating a dead downtown with a bunch of useless space.

And oh yeah, another one- we've got a big bus depot in downtown, in what I guess is a 'desirable' place, right on the central street. Our city council:
1) voted to relocate the bus depot to the edge of downtown, right into the middle of an extremely nice redeveloped section
2) voted to 'sell' the old building to a developer that is related to another council member
3) failed to disclose the fact in #2 to anyone, and also failed to disclose that the nice area was developed by a set of 'competing' developers who paid market price for their spaces (no benefits from the city at all for any of the developments)
4) blamed any resistance to dumping a bus depot in the middle of a nice residential/restaurant/brewery redevelopment on 'racism'
EDIT: 5) another good one: when zoning denied the council's rezoning request for the new bus depot location, they rewrote the zoning rules to allow it essentially saying that they could do what they want

It's glorious to watch.

Charleston, SC did something similar in the early 2000's when they were trying to get the land/funding for the Ravenel Bridge. One of the local councilman was standing in the way so they re-zoned him.
