That's racist!

What a saint. He gets called out, then apologizes for PR purposes. Do you really think that if someone hadn't filmed that, he'd be apologizing? Now THAT is a dumb take.

It shouldn't just slip out that easily unless you're an actual racist. Know how you avoid saying the n-word? Don't think it. Know how not to think it? Don't be a damned racist. But yeah, my take was the dumb one, while you defend a racist.

I know that there are certain political elements giving cover to bigotry right now by getting more upset at wokeness and cancel culture, as if those are the real problems. But anyone with an ounce of moral backbone knows that bigotry is far worse than calling out bigotry, and has ZERO tolerance for it. Screw Morgan Wallen. I don't want him remotely associated with Tennessee. Of course, there are hordes of racists in this state who love him and will defend him, so he's not the only problem.
I see both sides of the argument and it's tough. I agree it is a younger generation thing. I had friends in high school that would use the word in a joking manner (definitely not around any black folk) and I know those guys weren't racists, they were just treating it like any other curse word. That being said, it always made me cringe and I was never one to use it like that. So I do think it is wrong to use it jokingly, but I do get that people can say it and not be racists.

The fact that someone is permanently labeled a racist, one of the worst things one can possibly be, simply for uttering the magical syllables (in ANY context) is dumb, short-sighted, and gives cover to actual racists by watering down the meaning until the label becomes meaningless. It's fine to call out the use of the word - which I agree shouldn't happen, especially now - and chasten people who make the mistake, but the label "racist" should be saved for those who actually hurt or want to hurt people who are different from them.

Yeah, it's definitely worse to call a racist a racist when they act racist than to be a racist.

Know the best way to end bigotry? Make it unacceptable. It's far too acceptable for far too many.

This isn't that difficult. He said what he said. People who aren't racists don't say that. Drunk or not. The fact that this has to be explained to you speaks volumes.

Do. Do his black friends know. Subject-verb agreement.

Ah, the old, "I can't be racist, I have black friends!" trope. An oldie, but a goodie. Y'all really need to get newer material.

Lol. Stfu moron.

The even better “I am an old fool on the internet deciding who is racist” schtick.

So are you claiming his black friends are too stupid to understand he is a racist? All his black friends are dumb? Great stance.

uments with such rhetoric.

Ya know...I'm pretty sure we decided a long time ago that people who call black people the n-word are racists. I didn't make that decision on the Internet. Sorry you missed the memo. Although "STFU moron" is quite a compelling argument. You could win a lot of 6th grade playground arguments with such rhetoric.

I'm not claiming anything about his "black friends," that he has them, or what they think and why. But tokenism is a poor excuse for a decent argument.

Are you old or sheltered?

Who is “we”? People sometimes say stupid things, that doesn’t necessarily mean said person is stupid.

You’re claiming his black friends realize he is racist and yet still are his friend. So he has a lot of black friends that find “racist” to be an attractive character trait? That is some stupid **** you’re trying to claim.

Or they’re too dumb to realize he is racist. Quite the judgmental view you have about some of his friends of a particular race.

He's offended by Morgan's actions, but blacks aren't.

White people🤦‍♂️

I don’t know the guy and it isn’t a word I would use as it would make me look crass, but are you just as strict when it comes to black people using the term? And why or why not?
I don't think he is going to answer a legit question, He is too busy calling everybody a racist right now...I think somebody needs to sit him down and explain to him what a racist is...A word doesn't make you a racist, your actions do.

I missed that post until you replied.

I'm not a fan of black people using that term, either. But to answer the question, no I don't think it's as bad when black folks use it. And no, that's not hypocritical...that word, more than any other in American history, has a connotation of vitriol and hatred behind it and that evil comes from white people directing it at black people. So yes, there is a difference. White people shouldn't say it. A better question is, why are some white people so upset that they can't say it? Is it really that hard not to use a word that has been harmful to a particular group of people for centuries? How about trying to understand something from the point of view of others? I have said it before and I was wrong. I was racist in the past. I made a decision over a decade ago to never use that word again. But I'm not willing to say I'm 100% not racist now. Complacency allows old tendencies to creep back in. We're all wired to be tribal. But we should work hard to empathize and understand people of other cultures and races. Constantly.

And to your point about words vs. actions...you actually hit on something worthwhile. Racism is far more harmful in its institutions, rather than in words. We have racism embedded in all parts of our culture and, unless we really want to understand it, we won't. But that doesn't mean that using the n-word isn't also racist. Even if Morgan Wallen has black friends (a bizarre, tokenist, and cliche'd argument). Those words (especially THAT word) represent(s) something bigger.

I'm done. If some people want to really think about things from an objective and purposeful point of view, they will. If they want to defend their own existing notions because changing is uncomfortable, they will do that too...and resent those who suggest doing otherwise.
