Leighton is not a football guy, and to be honest, thats very disappointing to me. Football was always my sport, until I had the wreck. Its OK though, maybe he will pick it up later. As far as your kid, practice makes perfect, he will get it.

He's been practicing like crazy every thing was good until yesterday's practice. He got squared off in every drill with guys that have 2-3 years experience a year older and about 50% minimum more body weight. It messed with him mentally and hit him hard again today. Thank goodness we have a 2 day break for him to regroup.

Not good. My son is getting his ass handed to him in football and his brain is starting to melt. He's tall but 55lbs going against 110lbers in some cases. I don't care if he's good I just wish he'd relax. He's over thinking it and making himself anxious.

You two hang in there. What positions is little DD playing?

thats good for him. I was the smallest one on my team for several years. I left the 9th grade 5'10". 170lbs, When I came back for the 10th grade, i was over 6' and 205. I was like the dude on Waterboy, I used all the crap I had taken over the years and applied it. Worked for me, had 2 scholorship offers when I had the wreck. Needless to say, they didnt progress into anything further.

P.nut is in 8th grade and weighs 110.
He plays corner and middle linebacker. he is the smallest kid on the field.

Stay with it 2D. He'll be fine.

At this point he's a sub with no clear home and will be subbing onto both sides of the ball. It could be a long year. I just have to get him to relax at this point and not hate it.

I know it's in him I just don't know how to get him to see that in himself after yesterday. If he'd go at it like he does when we practice at home he'd be fine. Since yesterday he gets nervous and hesitates and gets lit up. It was just a sucky 2 days as a dad. Never want to see your kid struggle, especially mentally.

yup, thats a hard pill to swallow, been through that several times with my 3. Actually, neither of my girls were very interested in sports. Probably because they are the least athletic people I know, got that after their mother. But, I gave them all the same opportunities as I give Leighton. I worked 10 times harder trying to teach them than I have ever had to with him. He is a natural baseball player but still struggles at times. 3 years ago, he went 0 for the season. That made him so angry, he spent all fall and winter hitting baseballs off of a tee out in the yard. Made him a better hitter too.

Tough spot. When I helped coach 7-8yr olds last year, our smallest player wasn't great. He had the most heart though. We noticed he was struggling and tried to put him in positions in practice where he could be successful. Have you talked to the coach at all? The worst thing a coach can do is make football not fun. Especially with the younger kids. They'll give up easily.

I wish this was 7-8, it's 7-9 with some turning 10 after the signup.
The coaches are trying. They have to get the team ready too though. That practice yesterday was just a tad bit more than he could handle. Basically he just had a lot of bad draws with who we was squared off against. Then he psyched himself out again today. it was a rain makeup otherwise it would have been spaced better. It is what it is, one day at a time. He's bounced back tonight after practice I just need to do the same.

Does he wrestle?

Keep your head up, DD! He's still young.
Good luck to you both!

I appreciate all the advice and the ears. I'm not one of these dads that wants his kid to be all pro I just hated to see him lose his confidence like that.

No. I'm not even aware of a wrestling group around here in that age bracket. He plays basketball. His frame is much better suited for that. I honestly had no idea this was the local huge kid league. It's the league where all the kids that are oversize for the other leagues go.

most kids dont really get going in sports until they are 10-11 or so, you have plenty of time. Just dont push him too hard and burn him out.

There is a Pop Warner league closer to us that several of his teammates can't qualify for due to weight. Wish I had known that I'd have stuck him in Pop Warner. Live and learn.

That's why we never started him sooner. Every sport he's played he's asked too. Ideally he'd have started 2 years ago with FB. I just want the kid to have fun. I'm done. Seriously appreciate all the advice.
