Even the great ones don't get it right

Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf are the class of the NFL - 04.13.98 - SI Vault

"I don't see Favre or Elway," Walsh says. "I see those guys on the next level. But Manning seems to be more pro-ready than Leaf."

The oft-quirky Walsh was the only one of the six experts who said he wouldn't take Manning with the first choice. "I'd pick another top player," he says, "and then I'd take [Michigan quarterback] Brian Griese in the second round. I think he could have the tools to be special."

That "Walsh" is the former 49er HC Bill Walsh.

Leaf is still one of the Top 10 rated QBs coming out of college from Mel Kiper

6. Ryan Leaf, Washington State (No. 2 pick, 1998)
Grade: 9.7

The mistake you can make with Leaf is assuming you wouldn't make the same mistake again. That's wrong. Leaf was a fantastic prospect and would be one today based on what we knew. Huge arm, great size, even the intangibles were there. He was a winner, a player who made others around him better in college and played well on big stages when given the chance. Who knows what would have happened to Leaf if he hadn't started on an awful team as a rookie. He simply wasn't prepared to fail and bounce back. He failed and never truly recovered.

Elway
Luck
Kelly
Bledsoe
Manning

I always think about guys who are system fits vs. the guys who transcend any system. Especially when looking at QBs, some guys just plain get picked by the wrong team.

Also, it's funny how much meaningless info gets put out at this time. As if Wonderlic scores will really affect the draft at this point or whether anyone is worried enough about Dee Milliner's injury history to not take him in the top ten.

Joey Harrington comes to mind. So does David Carr.

Look at Tom Brady. 6th round pick who got A) The perfect coach who was willing to completely change his offense for him B) Walked into a perfect situation and C) Had an injury happen for him.

The Colts also were perfect for Peyton.

Joe Flacco walked into the perfect situation with the Ravens.

Ryan Leaf would never have been a successful NFL QB because A) He didn't have the work ethic and B) He didn't have the mental toughness to overcome mistakes

While he is incredibly gifted, Aaron Rodgers went to a great situation.

Agree about Harrington and Carr. I might throw Tim Couch in that mix too.

While I don't think he would have worked out with any team, JaMarcus Russell and the Raiders was a certified disaster.

Indeed. Maybe Reggie McKenzie changes that now that Al has passed.

It seem like the NFL is better when the Raiders are good, always wanted to see a super bowl between the Raiders and Cowboys got close a few times in the 70s when you played real football instead of this so called football i believe in safety and make the game better but what i see today is not the football that i grew up to love, im think before Roger is threw the game we all love wont resemble the game we grew up playing what a shame trying to bring it to the college game i seen a good hard hit in the aurburn spring game the hit was hard they kicked him out make me sick go ahead put a flag on the players now and get it over with somebody needs to take a stand against Roger and stop[ him before he destroys this wonderful game.

To be fair to David Carr, he was absolutely ruined by that Houston offensive line before he could even get started.

Hence why I cited him as an example as to someone in a bad situation.

Had he not been drafted by them, I could see him having a Joe Flacco/Eli Manning type career. Solid, not great.
