The 2014 Winter Olympics - Sochi

They were saying yesterday that of the 90 medals all time that the Dutch have won at the Winter Olympics, 84 were in speed skating. Talk about a one trick pony.

84 winter medals for a country with no mountains and a population about the size of NYC seems pretty damn good regardless of what sport they're in.

It is a tiny country, but for having such a small population, they turn out a lot of good soccer players too. Have they mentioned anything about what lends Holland to producing so many world class speed skaters?

The Netherlands is about the size of Tennessee but has three times the population. There are no mountains but there are a ton of canals and ponds that freeze over in the winter. When I was a wee lad I skated from my backyard all the way to school. If the ice gets thick enough theres an annual 120-mile race called the Elfstedentocht ("eleven city journey). There's something special about skating on natural ice. Too bad we aren't better at ice hockey or the other skating events.

US lines at practice this morning:

JVR-Pavelski-Kessel, Parise-Backes-Callahan, Pacioretty-Kesler-Kane, Brown-Stasny-Oshie

Suter Shattenkirk, McDonagh-Carlson, Orpik-Martin, Fowler-Faulk

What a series, Japan's point loses the puck on the blue line, awful turnover, but Russian stuffed on the breakaway. Lets go Japan

I thought her face was at least a 10.7

Russian women often get a bad wrap in our culture in terms of their physical attractiveness. I have to admit, I've never really understood that thinking. I think they're gorgeous, as are many Eastern Europeans. When my wife was staying in the dorms at UT, she lived on the same floor with the international students. She said all the Polish people (men and women) looked like models.

I know, cool starry bra.

Kournikova, anyone?

Wow, Shaun White didn't even medal in halfpipe.

Frustrating. What events left can the US rack up some medals in? Obviously, we stand a good chance in medaling in some of the team sports, but that's not how you pile up the medals.
