The 503rd thread about the GOP in 2012

to some degree it has to, but the cyclical nature of it says it's likely to get decent to solid before the next election. That bodes poorly for several reasons.

First, some idiots are going to proclaim his policies as overwhelmingly successful, though none will have had time to truly impact anything, and claim Obama responsible for the recovery.

Second, the next round of socialist moves with likely trump this round.

Third, SC will probably get another disaster because unlikely we turn around the Senate in the next three elections.
And the next conservative will probably come to power at the time our Greece like policies take effect...

don't forget the Kentucky ice storm, the Iceland volcano, earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, and the oil spill.

OK...since Obama has been in office FEMA has acted in a timely manner in every single disaster. FEMA was nowhere to be found days after Katrina hit in the Gulf. Pretty easy to see who had competent people in charge of our nation's emergency management system. LOL

There is a republican out there who might beat Obama but he isn't coming from the far right

That isn't true. Obama couldn't win from the far, far left either, but he did.

The guy that beats Obama will do so on a minimalist government platform.

Simply not true - FEMA was on the scene but hampered by both the governor of LA and mayor of NO.

Also, the surprise in Katrina came the day after the storm hit -- that's when the breaches occurred.

Two thoughts.

First, I agree with you that, if Obama can be beaten in 2012, it will be on such a platform.

Second, however, I wonder whether the candidate who will pursue that agenda can get the GOP nomination in the current environment.

I think the current environment screams for government minimalization, and Europe's current crop of issues is helping drive that point home.

I don't know if Obama can be beaten, but we double dip or gov'ts start losing AAA ratings and it'll be a tussle.

Actually....

due to the bureaucracy of the system, certain mandates had to be taken care of at the local and state levels before FEMA could hit the ground. Once that little storm started brewing the folks in DC practically begged the two idiots in Louisiana to do their part so that it could be declared a federal disaster area and FEMA could get a head start.

Unfortunately the two idiots refused.

And don't get me started as to why ANYONE thought it was a good idea to try to let people ride out that storm.

If you've followed Nashville closely at all, the FEMA folks have said this is the best they have ever seen the actaul people take control of the situation before FEMA arrived. Unlike New Orleans in which the people there refused to actually do their part to try to take care of themselves.

Granted, there were many blunders in New Orleans. But don't try to place 100% of the blame on Bush.

That's because your are atuned to the economic problems and lack of fiscal discipline. Watching what is going on in these GOP Senate primaries, however, suggests that its the social policy conservatives who are the most vocal right now.

That might change by 2012. Certainly, in elections past, both eventual nominees have had to cater to the further right or left of their parties, and then once in the general can get back to more mainstream ideas.

Is the US facing a realistic threat of an actual bond rating reduction by 2012?

I put 0 % of the blame on Bush for anything pre-Katrina.

I put 50 % of the appearance of not giving a crap about the aftermath on him for being a really poor politician about it, 20 % of the blame on the Dem poltiical machine for making it seem like Bush's fault, and 30 % on FEMA for being a tpyical government bureacracy and no one knowing what the f to do in an actual emergency.

If anything but reckless spending dominates any Senate race, primary or otherwise, the GOP should be scrapped. Hell, it should be any way.

I don't think any ratings agency has the nads to drop our debt ratings, but the language around all sovereign debt can tell the story. Corporates borrowing cheaper than Uncle Sugar will be plenty. Europe will likely see several countries take a wallop because their quasi social economies won't lead out of this recession.

the mistake make was the local and state guys not calling in the national guard right away (even though they were offered many times). do that and i bet a lot of this "bush hates black people" nonsense wouldn't even have taken hold

Didn't Jindal make a bad impression with his speech a year ago? I know it was just one thing but it seemed like it would hurt his chances.

He did perform poorly in that speech, but I have never seen anyone do well in that setting. First of all the person is having to follow the President and he or she is in a room pretty much all alone. It has to be tough to be in that setting.

Bob McDonnell's response was so much better because it was before the assembled Virginia legislature.

actually, what should happen next time is that right in the middle of one of Obama's bigger lies, entry music should start playing, say "My City Was Gone" by the Pretenders and while everybody in the Chamber is looking around for Rush, the Undertaker appears out of nowhere behind Obama...
