I'm in college now, so I'm pretty young, but I've listened to music from a lot of different eras, and I've always been particularly fond of the 90's. Grunge is my favorite kind of music, so naturally the early 90's would've been heaven on earth for me, which I guess makes me biased. But hell, even the hip hop from the 90's was tolerable.

But I've also gotta give credit where credit is due. The 60's and 70's brought along so many revolutions/trends in the music industry that both decades have to be up near the top. So personally, 90's is my preference, but I'm very thankful for what the 60's and 70's brought. The Beatles, The Stones, Hendrix, The Who, Zeppelin, etc.

All music has it's place in time. You see a lot of the music from the 60's and 70's were covers of the fifties best groups songs, it is more than you might think. if you want to see the progression from ere to era. Since I assume most of you have not lived it. I recommend anything to do with The Time Life Series and all it's off shoots of genres.

I'm only 19 man and I only listen to the 50s- 70s man, JMO but some of the best bands and singers came from that era. At least the music was real, not like the fake crap out now.

We could start another thread of favorite Beatle songs.

Hey Jude and Yesterday would be a good start.

Seen Rare Earth in mid 70's, one of the opening acts to Steve Miller Band. VH was next in line to Rare Earth.

Best popular music decade, yes.

Best music decade in general, no.

Most people generally say that the 60's and 70's are the best decades in music but there perspective is skewed. The only song's you hear from that era are the best of best and they have been hammered into your head for most of your life. There were just as many truly awful bands then as there are now but they have been forgotten.

I'd go for the 70s over the sixties. Particularly for RnR.

We saw massive transition during the 70s - probably more so than the 60s. The 70s continued psychedelic, matured heavy metal, jam, punk, new wave, disco (yes I know), rap, country rock, southern rock, etc. You can look to country, R&B and blues as well - all massively morphed during this decade.

The absolute best period of music was from the mid 60s to the mid 70s. The number of great bands from that era is exponentially higher than any other. You also had some really cool new things going on with music that hadn't been done before and is still copied to this day. Progressive rock took off. Fusion became a great new style. Limits were being torn down.

It's not even close

But within two years the anti-progressive/anti-fusion movement (PUNK) emerged and totally brought RnR back into it.

I love some Genesis, Yes, etc. but PUNK was a direct reaction to 7+ minute songs with elaborate structures and endless solos.

That morphed into New Wave and of course Rap emerged in the mid/late seventies.

You can't leave out the massive music change that occurred in the second half of the 70s.
