The absence of Bob Kesling in Puerto Rico

The reason Randy Smith does a good job is because he used to do the UTC hoops play-by-play for their televised games in the late 70's and 80's.

Honestly, I will be the first to say I just get lost trying to figure out the football action when Bob (Field Marshall) Kessling (Kesselring) is calling the action, but in hoops, he does a much better job and I can actually follow the action. Why he can do so much better calling the action in a sport where the action moves much faster is beyond me.

Play by play for UTC ball in the 80s. Was that 1 or 2 games?

A handful of regular season games (no more than 4 or 5 per season) and the Southern Conference Tournament (another 2-3 every year). His favorite moniker is "sa-wish" on made baskets (heard him do it today a few times, btw). Trying to follow the John Ward "bottom" somewhat, I guess.

I will grant you that is no where near the degree of television we see today, but, even with that few a number of chances to do these broadcasts, he did okay. He was local sports news anchor for the NBC local affiliate (WRCB TV) in Chattanooga for more years than I can count, so I guess he could polish his broadcasting chops there, too.

My female dog, Sadie, could do a better job calling the game than "into the Checkerboards "Bob. And people would probably have a better understanding of what's going on....just saying. :)

I completely disagree with that observation. Slob is infinitely worse at basketball! You can hear action, whistles, and crowd noise while he's telling some stupid story about something he researched about a player on the opposing team. You can listen for 10 min, real time, and never hear the score or time. Every player, in every game, that has ever had the ball, apparently, "has the ball taken away but gets it back."

Maybe its because I'm a basketball guy, but I've never heard worse.

Ever heard him do play by play for a football PPV broadcast? He makes Kesling sound like Al Michaels.

I think he's reaching over for Bobby Denton's bottle of Jack during the telecast. He don't know who anyone is by the 3rd quarter.

I base my opinion upon having watched broadcasts paired up with the video footage. Hey, its just an opinion.

Don't let it bug you. You can feel free to disagree as vehemently as you want and you won't hurt my feelings in the least.

Randy is actually pretty decent for radio broadcasts. I would rather go deaf than to listen to his color commentary, though.
