I can see AA’s POV: I get Sale, hope in a contract year he stays healthy and gives me 3 WAR and then I either tip my cap to him and let him walk or just can replace Chuck’s $20M with Sale’s for 2025. Sale was still a 2 fWAR in 120 IP’s with a high K rate. Stuff is still excellent. And I don’t need to rush AJSS, Waldrep or Ian. In a vacuum, makes sense.
But once again, just this whole strategy. You’re gonna pay Sale/Morton $30M this year when you could have gotten Snell for $30M/year (and I don’t even love Snell!!). This whole “I cannot take any risk in the SP market” is so asinine. Ask the Rangers if Eovaldi was worth the second year (shoutout my boy
@TBrown). Ask the Phillies how the ROI was for Wheeler. Ask the Astros how the Verlander trade went. Was signing Jon Lester a good move for the Cubs? Scherzer for the Nationals? HELL ASK THE RED SOX ABOUT HOW THE CHRIS SALE TRADE WENT IN 2018!
What is the damn point of having all these awesome position players locked up on long term, under market deals when my ****ing GM won’t give one halfway decent starter a multi year deal or trade for a controllable pitcher? It’s so infuriating to keep treating the SP market like we are the Cincinnati Reds or Kansas City Royals.
