The best 3 finishes by amateurs came in 1947, 1956, and 1961. It'll never happen in the modern game. I think the best one could do was probably Sam Bennett a couple of years ago.

We are starting AJSS and Bryce elder in 2/3 game this weekend while we wasted 90 Strider bullets In AAA today. Still can’t get over that

Bennett finished 16th in 2023. He was playing absolutely out of his mind and finished 10 off the lead as well.

If the tournament was an 18 or 36 hole event an amateur might win it one day. It's so hard to run with professionals over 4 rounds, especially given the pressure cooker that the final 18 and especially the final 9 are. Has an amateur ever led after 18 or 36 holes? I'm not sure if that has ever happened either.
