Stokes wasn't extending his shooting arm on his free throws. Easy fix. I'm surprised a coach didn't mention it during the game.
Mike Kitts is a pathetic official. He's old. He's overweight. And he's incredibly inconsistent. How is he calling games higher than a high school level?
Typical playing down to your competition tonight. Good win. Great road win.
Barbee is black Calipari without the studs.
4. The one issue UT has defensively when playing two big men is that switching screens has become a problem. Multiple times the guards called for a switch and Kenny was screwed. UT has to get that fix if they are going to go to two big men for 10 minutes a night.
9. The defense has been porous the last two games. I can't exactly pinpoint the reason, but I noticed UT just isn't playing the same off-ball defense. I think on-ball they are doing well. However, I haven't noticed the same urgency. It seems like teams are taking advantage of the big showing on an off ball screen. I noticed multiple layups on cuts tonight against our big men when they showed to help a shooter off the screen, and the big man slips to the basket. That has to tighten. Cuonzo needs to let the guards go over off ball screens and give it a different look.
I think Stokes' headband just wasn't on quite right. That was the source of the missed free throws.
Get Wayne Chism down here to show him how to put on a headband.
I have noticed and pointed this out as well (Texas A&M game is where I first noticed it). Stokes is notoriously bad for hedging out to the perimeter when his man sets a screen for a shooter, thus momentarily leaving his man wide-open for a pass beneath the basket for an uncontested dunk or layup.
Kenny just gets lost too often against teams that use a lot of motion. It's like the carnival game where you have three cups and you hide a ball beneath one, moving them around trying to confuse the contestant by making you guess which cup the ball is under.
In the end, concentration and focus are the main culprits. Stokes has to remember that a shot from 20' is better than a shot from 2' from a defensive standpoint. Kenny has to stay with his man and stop watching the action.
Saw this on twitter....
@govols247: Jarnell Stokes wasn't kidding. He shot free throws when the Vols got back home to Knoxville tonight. He finished at 3 a.m.
I've been kinda hard on this kid but I love this. Speaks to his character that he was embarrassed and went to work to get the problem fixed. Some kids in his position would've gone all prima donna and acted like a punk. Good for him.
Edit: heard that Yemi was there to rebound for Jarnell. I was even more impressed by that. #goodteammate
