The Bear

Would of turned 100 today if he were still alive. Makes me smile every time I think he had a losing record to the Gen. and to think we beat him the last time we played. For you older guys and gals; who would you rather beat; Spurrier or Bryant?

The Bear I respect much much more. But Spurrier I'd rather beat because I just aint got no use fer 'im.

I disliked the Spurrier of Florida more. The Bear truly was old school. He was notorious for badmouthing his own team, even when he knew that they were loaded with four separately interchangeable backfields. At the same time, he lavishly praised his opponents, at least for public consumption, to the point that you really didn't feel humiliated if he beat you, 66-3. I do not remember him taking the kind of snide, verbal potshots at opponents that Spurrier so often did at Florida.

I believe that Bryant truly respected Tennessee, but I lost a lot of respect for him in 1980 when he had a 20-0 lead, with the ball inside our 5-yard line and less than 30 seconds left, and called a timeout to set up a final touchdown, which gave them a 27-0 victory. He could have just as easily taken a knee at that point but deliberately chose not to do so.

I remember watching the coaches presser with Fulmer and Paterno. Talk about an old school coach. I KNEW that he had us beat in that presser. He talked about how its such a privilege to step on the field with a program as storied as Tennessee, and how great Tennessee was, etc. etc... then he proceeded to whip us in the bowl game.

LOL... classic!

Thanks!

wait...he was born on 9/11?

coincidence?

Ouch. Didn't realize I shared a birthday with CPB. It was bad enough sharing a day with the tragic event 12 years ago.

On a separate note, the Bear seemed so old to me when he passed in the early 80s. But, Spurrier is just a year younger today than CPB upon his death.

Hard living in the form of too much booze and cigarettes take a toll. I enjoy a George Dickel as much or more than anyone, but there is a limit at to how much the liver can take. All things in moderation!!

The Bear was a Legend. He earned it. Coaches dream for respect like he held.

Spurrier is an annoying Man. He whines. Coaches like him gain enemies.

Don't confuse the two.
