The best argument for why the pass D will be better

OP, what makes you think Beck won’t be an upgrade over Bennett? So essentially what you are saying is the pass defense will be better is because we won’t be playing any good QBs. Wow. I guess that’s the only way Martinez can be good. Either he has to have super elite talent or play mediocre QBs.

Odds are good there will be a drop off in QB play from a QB that won back to back NC's

Why on earth would you think Beck would be better Bennett was last year?
And yes, Martinez sucks. The secondary was partly bad statistically because they play really good QBs. Not quite the case this time.

We were ranked 127 out of 131 in pass yards given up in 2022. My argument for why the vols pass d will be better?

1. It will be VERY hard to slide down from 127.
2. The team has more experience and some really good recruits
3. Russ defense was 21 out of 131 and will get better. Can't throw TDs from your back.


There were three SEC teams in the bottom five of pass d in 2022. Tennessee @ 127; Vandy @ 128; Arky @ 131

Meaningless statistic. We were number 30 in points allowed. That's the only thing that matters.

I'd gladly give up 300 yards/game if we keep our opponents scoreless.

There's a HUGE difference in level of QB play this year compared to last.
Also there is uncertainty with who is starting at A&M. Is Devan Leary really that good?
This leaves Spencer Rattler as the only big concern, and no one is quite sure if he's left his jekyll and Hyde self behind.
So I can see more 3 n outs, more INTs, more sacks just from the simple fact those 4 really good players are gone (or Daniels case, not facing him) and Im not hearing a lot of praise on their replacements.
I am super concerned about the OL and of course Milton having what it takes to seize the big moments but I feel really good about the defense as a whole. This can take some pressure off Joe too.

Totally agree; not that familiar with the guy at UK, but he is supposed to be pretty good.

So the defensive secondary won’t actually be better, you’re saying they will appear better because the other teams won’t be as good as last season.

That’s no way to live life.

I don't think Beck will be better than Bennett. Bennett was alot better than people gave him credit for. He looked better in his NFL pre-season debut than about anyone (Hooker of course, didn't play).

I never said that and you won't be able to quote where I said that.
I'm saying that everyone is wondering if they will be better and I'm saying at worse, the mere fact they're not playing top 5 QBs helps tremendously in statistics and overall play of the defense.
This also includes better pass rush because they aren't playing those guys. Better pass rush = help for the secondary.
I don't think the pass D was as bad as it appeared. They were just really bad in some games and depending on the scenario.

Hadden
Burrell
TMac
Tank
Walker
Turnage
GJL
Charles
Rucker
Turrentine
Thomas
Harrison
and even William Wright

Guys like Rucker, Charles were out there playing important snaps vs Alabama. The chance we can get 4-5 that can do the job is different situations has to be decent. My main concern with pass D honestly comes with the pass rush

I have a site bookmarked (won't advertise) that presents e articles almost every day, that had about 4 different secondary related articles this morning. It will be hard for me not to be optimistic it will be better, just don't know how much better after going through them. Lots of experienced guys with 2 years left and a few with just 1, one coming off injury RS, a talented sophmore and of course a portal guy. Not to mention a terribly positive article on our three FR who all were early arrivals. Can we cobble an upper half SEC level group out of that group?

Anybody convinced they can one way or the other?
