The best college football player to ever wear.........

I'm not sure I'd have put him above Unitas if you are talking about toatal career, college and pro, or Weinke if you're talking college only but I am glad that UT is represented.

Danny Wuerffel, QB, Florida, 1993-96
The '96 Heisman winner was the best passer and leader of the Gators' Fun and Gun attack. No one was better at listening to what volatile coach Steve Spurrier said instead of how he said it.
Honorable mention: Stanford QB John Elway; Notre Dame QB John Huarte; Miami (Ohio) QB Ben Roethlisberger; Auburn QB Pat Sullivan; Virginia Tech QB Michael Vick.

Gimme a freakin' break.

Wuerffel's numbers and win/loss record are indisputable. If Peyton Manning is the choice for #16, the man who owned him has to be #7.

Several of the numbers they are letting readers vote on. Check #41-60 right now. You can vote for Johnny Majors and Beattie Feathers at their respective numbers. I voted for both of them but they are getting dusted.

Elway never won a Heisman. Sullivan never won a National Championship. Wuerffel did both.

You can't argue about the numbers he put up in college, they were amazing. However, the system Spurrier built produced Wuerffel. Forget about his NFL days and he was a great QB.

Bull.If he's so much better than Peyton, how come he never made it with the big boys in the NFL?Basically all Wuerffel would do is throw the long ball so speedy receivers could run underneath it. :dunno:

In case you missed it, the thread is about college football. In the three years they were in the SEC together, Wuerffel won 3 SEC Titles, a National Championship, and a Heisman. In that same period, Peyton Manning collected some really nice Citrus Bowl Hospitality Packs.

I'm not sure how they came up with this. Some of the slots they are filling by fan vote, which seems to be heavily slanted towards guys who perform(ed) well in the NFL. Others, it seems like the "experts" have chosen. A few are no brainers and some it's hard to say. Referring to my earlier post, if you are looking for the best QB to ever wear the #16 in college and you consider pro and college accomplishments for now Johnny U. should get the call with 3 pre-Super Bowl NFL titles, a Super Bowl victory and being a HoF'er. Maybe when Peyton is done he will have surpassed Unitas in career accomplishments? On the other hand, if you were judging solely by college stats, Weinke is by far the better college QB with a Heisman and a Ntl.C-ship to his credit. Manning was 40-9 as a college starter and Weinke was 32-3.

I always liked Johnny U.

John Elway also never even went to a bowl game.

Michael Vick was around for two years before going to the NFL.

Is this actually only about college accomplishments or is NFL factored in as well? One problem common to this sort of thing is that those voting have a tough time separating the two.

Uh, this from the same guy who kept shifting the Will Overstreet debate to the Falcons.

Problem solved if we look at previous discussions, based on DannyBoy's NFL flop, he in fact owes Steve Spurrier, Reidel Anthony and Ike Hiliard every dime he ever made in the NFL.

I agree.Only when it's convenient. Sometimes called "Wishy-Washy" or "Straddling both sides of the fence". :biggrin2:

Two completely different issues. The issue about Overrrated was related to his heart in comparison to Albert Haynesworth. You have heart or you don't. It doesn't matter if it's in NFL or College. It just took an NFL check for Overrated's goldbrick streak to take over. The Wuerffel/Manning debate was purely about their collegiate numbers and whether or not they were the best to wear them.

He should kick Manning a royalty as well. His chokes against Florida certainly helped build Wuerffel's legend.
