Best for the Vols? Tee Martin. (22-3) and a National Championship.

Best QB of all time? Peyton Manning.

Manning. The only thing is he has a hard time getting over the hump for certain things: beating UF and beating the Pats. It was nice to see him lead the Colts past the Pats.

He struggled against those two for sure. But many times, it was his team doing the struggling.

Peyton put on a show in the 95 FL game only to watch his defense crumble.

1996 FL was a comedy of errors again. Peyton threw a couple bad ones early, but the rest was the team. he threw for like 500 yards and 4 TDs. An INT or 2 of his 4 came off freak plays and tipped balls.

1997 He made one real bad throw. Other than that the protection sucked, he had Zero running game, and the defense lost again.

Pats. They simply had a better team. They won 3 of 4 SBs, so no one else could beat them either.

I know what you're saying, but I think he is so good that he gets too much blame for making 1 or 2 mistakes while his teams screw the pooch.

Tee Martin was a great college QB but lacked the arm in the NFL, I remember him doing a great job running the ball too back then, Cut ran the option a little back then with Martin

Tee's problem with the NFL was mental, not physical. He actually had a better arm the Manning.

Managing the game, reading defenses at speed, understanding the game, making decisions, etc, is tougher in the NFL. That was not Tee's strong point.

I don't know that I would agree with that. Tee could throw it through a wall and probably had better arm strength than Peyton Manning.

Agreed. Peyton threw a lot of picks against UF.

Always fun to talk with a colleague.

You know, Shuler had the same issues.

The list of big arms going bust in the NFL in long and distinguished.

This really isn't even close.

Peyton is in another dimension from Tee altogether.

It's sort of like asking if you'd rather have Dan Marino or Trent Dilfer.  Sure, Dilfer was the QB on the team that won a super bowl.  But it's not even worth discussing who the better player is.

No doubt Peyton was a great college qb for UT, and will go down as one of the top in the NFL, if not the best ever. Peyton ended the Bama streak, Tee ended the Gator streak. In college, Tee went undefeated, won a championship. Overall, seeing them both play in person for years, Tee kept his composer better than Peyton in big games plus he had the run threat. Peyton is now on an island alone in the NFL.I have never felt so much excitement about a UT football game as I did after the national championship win against FSU. I respect your opinions(Vol Fans) this is just mine.

Payton Manning no question.

BTW I vote for bluemoney's Go Vols sockpuppet for the "Wilson" Award for Excellence in surviving being shipwrecked in Georgia. :w00t:

As good as Peyton is, he never won a big game. He never beat Florida and Tee did. Peyton was a much better QB as can be seen by who is still playing, but Tee definitely was the better at UT for getting the W when it counted.

I don't begrudge this view, but I do disagree with it.

Tee's "big game" dominance is based off of one season -- we went undefeated. From that singular standpoint, he did play well in big games.

However, for that to hold true, we need to look at Tee's career. Did he play great in the big games in 1999? I don't think so; we lost 3 games that year. He played very poorly against FLA in '99, as one example. Tee directed arguably our most talented team of 1999 to a mediocre 9-3 season with no championships and no top 10 ranking.

Also, we have to take into account why we won those games in 1998. Was it because of Tee, or did the teams win with Tee? I hardly think TN's performance and win against FLA in 1998 was due to his tremedous play at QB -- because he had a terrible game.

Peyton gets a bad knock on this stuff because TN did not beat FLA. But he won plenty of big games (he only lost 2 games in his career where he started aside from FL). It's just that the games he did win many have revised history to say that they weren't big games.

The 1995 BAMA victory was a gigantic game because it ended a long streak. The Ohio State game in 1995 was a huge game against a great team. He won the SECC in 1997, the first for Fulmer.
