This is a really hard question to answer. The only way to truly tell would be to put them all in equal equipment. But as far as a driver getting the most out of what he had ole mop head Spencer ran it till it broke!

On the subject of Petty, Earnhardt and Gordon.....Pearson had 105 victories in half the starts of Petty and didn't run for the championship in those days. If he did, I don't think The King would of had as many victories or championships.

If Davey Allison, Alan Kulwicki and Tim Richmond had not died I think both Dale Sr. and Gordon's wins and championships would not be where they are.

One additional note ..I don't think Robbbie Gordon gets the credit he deserves but its of his own doing! Had he and Yates stuck together after Davey died he would of flourished!

These are strictly the opinions of CD12 and mean absolutely nothing!

Good call on Robbie Gordon, he would race a shopping cart if he could.

I can't help but pull for the guy! I haven't had a favorite driver in a very long time and usually make my mind up during the race as to who I am for and its usually the underdogs or the less fortunate! But you got to admire an independent owner in todays racing world! Plus Robbie has a set of balls on him!

Yep.

To take that one step further, I truly believe that if Sr. doesn't die in 2001, he has 8 championships right now.

I enjoy watchin' Robby sling a car around the track, too.

no.

Robbie has million dollar talent and a five cent head. the CART and NASCAR owners got tired of seeing him do stupid things and tear up their equipment, so he was forced to to buy his own team and tear up his own cars. which, not suprisingly, he has been pretty good at, one way or another.

and Jimmy Spencer is a stiff. but compareed to his broadcast skills, he should have stayed in in the driver's seat.

You're right Nascar has turned into a gentlemens sport!

There are a few guys that could and do race anything anywhere. Those guys are Stewart,Schrader, Robby Gordon,Ryan Newman and Carl Edwards. You could put those guys in any kind of car or truck and they would be a force.

it has nothing to do with being a gentlemans sport. i don't even know what you're trying to say.

i'm saying Robbie Gordon is an idiot, and Spencer is a no talent hack.

Call em what you want but neither are afraid of the system or the Nascar god's or Prima Donnas! Spencer showed his skill when he drove for Jr. Johnson, the only time he had equipment. Give me the days of Petty, Pearson, The Alabama Gang, Cale, Buddy, Bennie and Lennie Pond! When you raced what you brought and the driver actually knew how to work on a car! All you have now is a larger version of the IROC series with salesmen for drivers! With a few exceptions!

Overall, now that's a different story. I'd say the "KING" -Richard Petty was the best-having won over 200 races during his career. Will that be broken? Who knows? Jeff might. He's got over 70 wins-at least I think he does.[/QUOTE]

But at the time Petty was winning regularly, he had a big time sponsor when alot of the competition had JTrainDavis's Used Mufflers and Hubcaps for sponsors...the cars were not nearly as equal as they are today, not taking anything away from Petty, but thats just how it worked at the time..

As for today's best, i have to bring up my guy Matt Kenseth in the 17....humble, doesnt like the spotlight, just goes out and gets it done week after week....he's not a teen idol, a sex symbol, a badass, or the son of anyone famous...he's just a race car driver

The best drivers in Nascar, in my opinion are the drivers that can drive and excel in something besides stock cars. Jeffy and Jimmy do not fit in that category.

Don't like what he has become, but in his day Jeffy as you call him was one bad a$$ sprint car driver. The night he graduated high school he was racing wing to wing with Steve Kinser. He paid his dues. He started driving go carts when he was four years old, worked his way up. DADDY"S NAME DIDN"T GET HIM HIS SEAT!!

As far as what he does now, no he doesn't drive anymore on the side. Smoke, Schrader, Carl Edwards, and even ol Bobby Labonte is making a push into the weekend dirt racing. Bobby has hired himself an ace driver and put together a top notch SLM team.

I know Jeffy's racing history outside of Nascar and I am not impressed. Most racers start out racing go karts when they are young, that is nothing new. The only reason Jeffy "got his seat" was because Rick "the Felon" Hendrick was looking for someone young to "put in a seat" and he chose Jeffy. Jeffy is a so so driver that was given the best equipment since day one. He SHOULD have those 4 championships and then some.

This is as inaccurate as you can be.

yeah, Jeff Gordon is such a bad race car driver that he tested an F1 car at Indy several years ago and instantly ran it fast enough to qualify for the previous years race.

and 'Jeffy' got his seat at Hendrick because he proved at Bill Davis Racing that he could handle it.

WOW!!!! Jeffy tested an F1 car, big freaking deal! He was on the track by himself. It scared him so bad that he never wanted to race one. :)

Jeffy is where he is today because of Rick "The Felon" Hendrick giving him the best equipment.
