Is there a story why Peyton chose to wear number 16 at UT?

I don't know if he so much chose 16 as it was a matter of which numbers typically worn by quarterbacks were available. When Peyton arrived in 1994, the following numbers were already in use:

10 John Becksvoort, PK, 1992,93,94
11 Joey Kent, WR, 1993,94,95, 96
14 Jerry Colquitt, QB, 1991, 92,93,94
15 Lance Wheaton, QB, 1992,93,94
17 Quincy Prigmore, RB, 1992,93,94,95
18 DeRon Jenkins, DB, 1993,94,95
19 Mose Phillips, RB, 1991, 92,93,94 (UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics - Football)

Thank you, that makes sense, 18 was taken.

Loved it! Really one of the best documentaries I have seen. Even my wife loved it. I wish it would have been two hours and gone into the draft and their pro careers and the whole San Diego thing but you know it's great directing when a documentary leaves you wanting more.

Semi related...another great football documentary is Undefeated about Manassas High School in Memphis. It's on Netflix instant watch.

Don't discount the importance of Peyton's relationship with Coach Cutcliffe. Like Peyton, Eli was undoubtedly predisposed to like Ole Miss because of the career Archie had there. The fact that Cutcliffe became his coach made the decision to attend Ole Miss that much easier because Eli knew that he would have a trusted mentor and quarterback coach. It has been widely speculated, although I do not know if it has ever been definitively proven, that Eli did not want to deal with the expectations that would be heaped on him if he followed in Peyton's footsteps at UT.

This is exactly what I had heard about why Peyton didn't go to Ole Miss. I was in school at UT while Peyton was there and that rumor was going around then long before Eli was picking a school. I LOVED The Book of Manning, I just wish they would have gone into why Peyton picked Tennessee more. And I could go the rest of my life without ever seeing the Heisman stuff again (yes I'm still bitter).
