He's trying to demonstrate he's the smartest guy in the room. I bet he offered Max something like 6/140 over a year ago and never moved a penny. I think he'd rather be known as a super smart, shrewd, clever GM than as a GM that consistently has a team that is consistently making WS runs. He wants the reputation that the Rays have, not the one that the Dodgers have.I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a GM so callously let his big time World Series champion players walk. He refused to give Fred a 6th year when he repeatedly asked for it. He wouldn’t even negotiate with Dans past $100M. He didn’t try the last two years to even extend Max. I appreciate having a guy who won’t make a bad deal because of the past but at the same time the fact he won’t even negotiate is infuriating
Some of these big contracts are stupid. I think the end of the Soto and Turner contracts are going to be horrible. He's trying to demonstrate he's the smartest guy in the room. I bet he offered Max something like 6/140 over a year ago and never moved a penny.
It's "easy" to just offer the most money to big time free agents, and he doesn't want to play that way because then nobody knows how clever he is.

But I think you have to take calculated risks at some point. I think the idea is to always have a full stadium and avoid future rebuilds, but honestly I just dont think that's feasible.
Eventually you'll have to replace Acuna, Albies, Strider, Harris, Murphy, and with our reluctance to draft pitching we arent exactly sitting on a ton of bats. The only way to avoid rebuilds is to throw money at it like the Yanks and Duds do.

I agree, but the funny thing is that you can totally argue that trading for then immediately signing Olson and Murphy to huge deals is also pretty risky. He does seem risk averse, but at times he takes risk in a "Hey, you didn't think I was going to pull this move off, did you?" kind of way. It is kind of hard to figure out what his exact risk tolerance is.I think he’s so scared of what happened in Toronto and that it got him replaced he doesn’t want to get burned again. It’s obvious he has a major, major objection to risky trades and FA signings.
If he could build an awesome farm system, I’d be less objectionable to the processing. The problem is we are heading into year 7 of his tenure and the only players he’s signed or drafted worth a damn is Harris, Strider, and Schwell. I understand he used 2 first round picks to get Olson but Shuster was a bust, the 2022 high school arm class looks like a bust. Harris and Shea the only position players that have been anything at the MLB level. It’s highly concerning
Wasn't Ozzie signed before he took over?I agree, but the funny thing is that you can totally argue that trading for then immediately signing Olson and Murphy to huge deals is also pretty risky. I think he is probably one of the more shrewd GMs out there, but I don't think he's as shrewd as he thinks he is. I think what he really hangs his hat on is signing Strider, Riley, Ronald, Mike, and Ozzie to those extremely team-friendly deals.
