Would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone Jackson Merrill was ROBBED of ROY
I'm not sure about that. Even if Skenes was a completely anonymous prospect, it was utterly absurd how good he was as a rookie. I mean, he was one of the best pitchers in MLB overall last year, rookie or not. It's really a shame because if Skenes was something like 1/7 and came from Clemson and lost in the NCAA Super Regionals, then Merrill easily wins the ROY. But Skenes was 1/1 and won a national title and got the name recognition. Even then, it's insane how good Skenes was as a rookie. Merrill is the truth though. Only 21 and was that good from day 1, if he every learns to hit lefties, he's going to win an MVP
Jackson Merrill was the best center fielder in baseball and significantly underperformed his underlying stats. If his numbers aligned with his expected numbers he likely would have won the MVP. He was worth an entire win (fWAR) more than Skenes. He is an elite defensive CFer and put up 130 wrc.I'm not sure about that. Merrill had a hell of a year and probably wins the ROY if he debuted in most any other season, but had the unfortunate luck of being a rookie in the same year as Skenes.
All while playing a new (and difficult) position that he was sort of just... thrown into. He handled it so well that it became underrated. CF was painted as a disaster for them throughout spring.Jackson Merrill was the best center fielder in baseball and significantly underperformed his underlying stats. There’s not really a conversation to be had if you remove the “name value” from that vote
