Who was the best team in the first half?...and what's the predictions for the 2nd half.

NL - Dodgers
AL - Red Sox

The team to watch is the Giants. If they trade and get a big bat somehow they will win the wild card and be a TOUGH out in the playoffs with their pitching...

I also look for the Cubs to make a big run at winning the Central...I also would not be surprised to see the Cardinals come away with Roy Halladay...

Giants have a big decision to make... if they want their big bat, they lost a prospect or two.

next year and beyond... their rotation is looking amazing

Lincecum
Bumgarner
Cain
Sadowski
Alderson

then you got Sandoval... and Buster Posey will be an all star catcher.

It would almost disappoint me to see them jump at holliday and lose some of that

Just watched the highlights of the 1st half on MLB Network.

Lots of good, good stuff.

RIP Fidrych, Kalas, Adenhart

The Phils aren't gonna drop the champs title easily. 1st in the NL east, and they play their best ball in August and September. But hands down, the best team in baseball right now is LA, with or without Manny.

Their pitching is suspect to say the least...

No doubt. The thing to remember during the playoff run is that if a team has two stud pitchers and a solid closer (Lincecum, Cain, Wilson), they have a chance to win the whole thing. I think if San Fran can get a bat, they have a chance to go deep in the playoffs.

Lincecum did look like he had some jitters in the ASG and almost none of their players have been to the playoffs before.

And experience is a huge part of winning championships.

You didn't mention Sanchez, who got the no hitter. Not that it matters though, because he will surely get traded in the next 2 weeks.

Bumgarner won't be very good if he can't develop his breaking pitch.

My playoff teams:

AL- Boston, Chicago, LAA, Yankees. But I wouldn't be shocked to see the Rangers win the west.

NL- Philly, St. Louis, LAD, Milwaukee. Giants don't have the O or the experience.

He's already developed one. It was a huge issue coming in, because in high school all he had to do was pump 95 plus mph fastballs by poor little people (uh, myself included. same conference in high school) all game.

Scouts say it is scary that a kid as talented as he already is working that hard and picking up things that quickly... could be amazing.

They said it: "I'm running out of superlatives. I've never seen a player do the things he's done. I've never seen a player grow that fast and quickly. What he did was staggering. ... That's an unstoppable force, when you have that kind of talent and that kind of desire to get better. I think he's going to be a very special player for a very long time at the Major League level." -- Augusta GreenJackets Manager Andy Skeels

I guess he just throws fastballs every single pitch and has a 1.66 ERA and a .217 batting average against.

He has breaking stuff.

Only players ranked ahead of him on that list... Price (one scout said that was debatable, Price is just older), Wieters, Heyward, Porcello, Maybin

"Bumgarner looks like he's going to be something special. Not only does he throw 94-96 with ease, he's got ridiculously good command for his age. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him come up and have the type of success Tim Lincecum did when he was brought up. Think Clayton Kershaw, but with more command, and that's what you have in Bumgarner."

His breaking ball is practically the same as it was in high school according to scouts that have seen him. Right now his fastball is his only pitch better than average.

You can have an average breaking ball and a plus fastball, with plus plus command and be a very successful pitcher in the majors.

sure you can but Bum doesn't even have average off-speed stuff
Disagree. He has below average movement on his curve, but his off speed stuff is very deceptive. All his pitches come from the same arm slot and his curve and his change look exactly the same until the last couple feet. Throw in the fact that he can put the ball any spot in the zone and you have at least an average off speed stuff. Having the same arm speed and release point for all your pitches is a huge advantage.

I agree... not to mention the 95 mph heater spotted up wherever he wants it. and this year's situation could be like Price was last year.

I would be worried about Bum if i were a Giants fan. His K% has dropped significantly with each promotion, while his BABIP has gotten lower.

He is also 19... in AA... second youngest pitcher in the league... and has an ERA in the 1.5s... and has a BA against under .200... and a whip under 1.00... If I were a Giants fan, I'd be ecstatic with his development.

his stats have been good but name 5 starting pitchers in the majors who can live in the majors with only a 92 MPH FB?
