...is just genius. It seems so natural, like it could always have been part of UT's history. That, plus the whole concept of Foundation Day is great. It just sounds like an old school southern war holiday.

Well, that's enough stroking the egos of the marketing department. May main question is this:

Can you come up with an extension of the brick metaphor that is good enough for the university to steal it? Post 'em if you got 'em.

Hopefully the basketball team doesn't catch on and the "brick by brick" is just a metaphor and not a way of life for them.

I think we can come up with something better than "Foundation Day." We gotta have something with "Vol" or "Smokey" in the title - UGA's "Dawg Nights" is a great moniker.

"Vol Venture"?
"Rocky Top Recruiting"?
"Vol Veekend"?

As you can see, the creative thing is not my gift...

Butch Jones is the mortar that must hold these bricks together. A brick house with no mortar doesn't do you much good.

Honestly, I think the "brick by brick" is meant, in part, to curb instant expectations. I think you'll hear Jones use this phrase a lot especially after the 1st few losses. Jones is correct, it will take time to build. But the fans are so eager to win now, that he'll need to constantly remind them.

The brick metaphor is genuis because in a subliminal way, it lets us know that the re building job will take several years. Thus, we will tend to not become impatient and run CBJ off when we are not in a BCS game in season # 3.

That metaphor helps him buy more time to get the job done.

With the renovation to the stadium being largely brick based - once a class is finalized and the kids sign in February - why not put each ones name on one of the bricks on the front of the stadium.

You could have the 2014 class together in one area and then their family and friends could see that they truly are a brick in the wall so to speak.

Picture of the bricks on front of Neyland Stadium. Camera pans to show mammoth OL, DL and RB and announcer says "are you a player worthy of being called a brick for rebuilding Vols football or just sand that blows away with the wind? Come and be a Volunteer and experience the feeling of joining the Vol Family and be a VFL and another Brick in the Wall of Neyland Stadium history"

Bricks also put accountability on the players and recruits. It's not tug of war where everybody's pulling one rope, it's individual bricks that build the dynasty.

They should take all those kids bricks and build a welcome to Tennessee sign with them that faces south into Alabama. The sign should say something like, "Thank God you're back in Tennessee."

Seem smartalec journalist is now licking his chops, waiting for an opportunity to use this in a headline. Thanks.

Now you're thinking!

Definitely, except I'm not willing to concede that there will be lots of losses. Still, the whole thing evokes a feeling of laying a foundation of strength for the future of the program.

What about a wall (with an opening of course) coming out of the opposing tunnel that leads to the field. Each brick has a prominent players name on it. At the end of each season, new names could be added.

As Marshall McLuhan said in his spin on the original line by Robert Browning, "A man's reach must exceed his grasp, or what's a metaphor?"

I personally love what the coaching staff is doing with the "workman" mentality in using the "brick by brick" metaphor. I think it can have many meanings to many different people and many different situations.

Way better than "pieces of the puzzle" and other similar quotes.

"She's a brick house" by the Commodores (Lionel Richie's not Vandy's) should play once in the pregame and the cheerleaders should have a routine with it.

I like the idea of having a brick tunnel with the names of the players on it. Thought that was a good one.

New recruits should have a brick laying celebration where they take their brick and mortar it and place it onto the growing wall. Under the guidance of a brick mason.

SEC championship, Bowl game victories, and National championships should be commemorated with a brick structure (maybe like an obelisk) and every brick will have the name of every player on that particular team.

Brick stickers could be placed on helmets for reward. Like FSU and others due with their logos. However, I would want these stickers to be orange and placed in a checkerboard pattern as the season progressed so that it already ties in with our end zones.

Have to say one of the funniest posts I've ever seen on this site was somebody who said something like "we can take bricks to the game and throw 'em at the other team".

To aggravate the ulcers of the uniform police, incorporating the outline of bricks into the present design would be a cool compromise...in a few years recruits won't know or care how old the tradition of FOUNDATION WEEKEND is but it's a goodun...and here to stay...drops the mic
