The Carter Connundrum

Carter is a career 37 percent three point shooter much higher than Simmons was when she was here. She dropped to 35 percent this season after bombing it as a freshman. Overall she is 42 percent from the field which is as good as any of the guards on the team. She fails to have the mentality of Reynolds who loves to fire up a shot even though she is a career 30 percent three point shooter and 38 percent from the field overall.

And that's what currently separates Andraya from Jordan, Ariel and Simmons. Those three are not afraid to take the shot even though statistically, they are behind Andraya in FG%. Simmons or Massengale can miss 4 threes, but they'll keep shooting them thinking they will go in. If Andraya misses her first few shots, usually she will stop shooting (although she's had some games where she kept pulling the trigger). She needs to stop being afraid of missing.

Carter seems to lack offensive confidence--and that is not good, given that she's an excellent athlete, our most athletic guard, and she's got a nice jump shot--certainly better technique that Reynolds and Mass. You can't be afraid to shoot. The only way to develop confidence is to shoot until you start making shots and feeling good about yourself. (We saw this with Graves--afraid to shoot for outside of 4 feet for two years; now will shoot outside jumpers but is still a touch hesitate about doing so--she always thinks for a moment before shooting. That is usually not a good thing but in Graves' case it seems to work. Where Graves needs to improve is in learning how to score from 8-10 feet from basket.).

I think Warlick and the offense are part of the problem--sometimes. Some players are hesitate to shoot, even when open, because it's been drilled into them to get the ball to Harrison or, now Graves. We saw that a lot against Pitt. I saw three players beat their defender and get to the foul line and not take an open 12-footer. You're not going to get a much better shot than that, save for a layup. Take it.

Our guard play generally is pretty erratic. It's hard to know what we'll get from one game to the next. Carter can score 8 or, like against Zaga, 0. Mass can hit some shots or be terrible. Reynolds is usually good for 6-8 because she gets to the line a bit. She is good at using her size to drive down the left lane and getting a pretty good 10 foot shoot, but she misses too man of them. You can't be 1-3 shooting from 10 feet--not consistently.

Next year, DeShields and Nared--assuming she develops as I think she can--should give our offense a boost, and both Reynolds and Carter ought to be better as well.

I don't think it's Warlick and the offense at all. If Massengale gets the ball and she's open for 3, she's going to shoot it.

It's a confidence thing. Burdick used to have the same problem; she doesn't anymore.
