The changing face of the SEC

You make some great points, lawgator, but I think this is just a down year for the SEC.

Is it tough to go through this conference undefeated? Hell yes. You need talent and lots of luck.

But it is not impossible. Since the expansion in 1992, there has been a total of 5 teams to go undefeated in league play.

4 of those teams finished undefeated through regular season play.

3 of those teams won National Titles.

That's just in the last 13 years.

Is this conference tough? Hell yeah, but it's not an absolute impossibility to go undefeated.

I'll bet it happens again in the next 3 or 4 years, maybe sooner.

I just seems alot tougher when your school is one of the schools that won't do it. LOL

In context, he was simply acknowleding his own surprise at how tough it is in this conference.  He's complimenting the competition level in this conference.  Give the guy a break.

I see what you're getting at and I understand, but why do I have to give him a break again? Is it because he came into the SEC thinking he was going to rule the world and now he can't cash the check and is serving the humble pie now? Ok ok, I guess I'll give him a break... :dunno:

2. It would remove some great rivalries. What about Georgia Tech vs. Georgia? Florida State vs. Florida? USC vs. Notre Dame? Virginia vs. West Virginia? The list goes on.

That's the only downside I can think of for that plan. I guess if they want to play their rival, they both need to win their conference. :D

Going undefeated in the SEC is far from impossible but very unlikely to happen.

I can't remember the last SEC team to be picked Pre-Season #1 and run the actual table

That's a totally different point you bring up there, U-T. The preseason pick rarely wins the SEC, much less runs the table.

I would guess the last time a team picked to win the conference who actually ran the table was 1995 Florida. Yes, I know they lost to Nebraska, but they ran the conference and regular season table, though.

Before that, I dunno.

Well that's an issue of money... And besides that, how do you think bowls have always worked? The places with the most money, best locations and biggest draw. The Fiesta Bowl is in a great winter vacation spot in the sun belt, lots of tourist options, very profitable, etc. And aside from that, the Cotton Bowl is still pretty much the most prestigious of the non-BCS bowls.

Now I totally agree with you on that one. The BCS is mostly about $$$$$$$$.

I agree, but a playoff system could be devised to use the bowl games.

Me and a buddy came up with one several years ago and it needs to be updated, but you can get the idea at http://www.ncaafplayoffs.com.

Yes, it's all about the money, and the only way you can get a playoff is to SHOW THEM THE MONEY... it's all in there.. let me know what you think.

It's good and all but you know the playoffs just aren't going to fly.

I've said it before, virtually the only way a playoff will happen is if there is a complete nationwide boycott of any bowl game viewership and attendance.

The SEC sux. If a team is really good, they can go unbeaten in this league easily.

LSU is loaded and they couldn't do it this yr...it takes alot of factors to run the table in this league.

Texas, USC, would have gone unbeaten in the SEC this year.

Maybe, Maybe not...seems UT is having their hands full with A&M..and USC almost lost at ND...those two teams could lose at an LSU, AU, or UGA.

Those are championship teams that find a way to win. They wouldn't lose to anybody in the SEC.

But if the BCS was really about preserving tradition then the Cotton Bowl would be part of the BCS instead of a johnny come lately game like the Fiesta.

Amen...the Cotton Bowl was always a biggie.....I watched Sugar, Cotton, Orange but never the Rose. Jan.1 was always the best day of the year no matter if Ga. was in the Sugar or not. THe NCAA has pimped out the big games to Disney with all being the john's taking whatever they give us.

last year did we not argue about Auburn being a part champion.....didn't it keep us discussing the BCS....what good has it done. We always crowned at least 1 champion and until you have a playoff we will still argue about is _______ team the best. With the old bowl tie ins football was discussed and many teams went home happy. I remember the days when _______ team celebrated that we are the Sugar Bowl Champions. Now all we discuss is the USC won it all. The BCS clarified nothing for me. I prefer a playoff! There has never been a valid arguement against one. The NCAA just talk out both sides of the ass. All other divisions in football, and all divisions in the other sports have playoffs. For god sakes the were showing the water polo national championship on Fox Sports. Where is Brian Bosworth when you need him. Someone in a national arena sticking to the NCAA.

Texas would have lost 1, maybe 2 games, in the SEC this year.

Good team but far from perfect. Their schedule was as big a joke as LSU, UGA's, or others
