The cost of being a fan............

I don't think anyone would have been upset with Gruden, and I'm sure a lot of people wanted him.

The people I'm talking about are the ones who are now blaming basically the entire Tennessee administration for somehow ruining a deal that likely didn't exist in the first place, and are now *****ing and moaning about how we made a desperation hire because we couldn't close on the big one. There's a distinct difference between wanting a guy and whining when the pipe dream doesn't come to fruition.

I am not whinning at all and I wanted Gruden as much as the next guy. I think there was more going on with Gruden than any of us know. Do I think Hart screwed up the deal? I don't know so I wouldn't begin to hold it against him. Do I think we hired under what we should have? Yes, absolutely. That doesn't make me a Nega-Vol for holding a up a higher standard for our football program? I would hope not.

I don't think Hart made an attempt to make a big hire. I only base that on his comments before and since the hire. I don't hold CBJ in a bad light either as I would expect him to want to take on this challenge. I hope he succeeds as any VOL fan would want. Do I have doubts that he will bring us championships? Yes, I have serious doubts but that does not mean that I want him to fail to prove a point. That would be self-defeating and silly.

Why is it that you and others refuse to believe the statements made by several including Guden's agent that Hart didn't talk to Gruden. The boosters were handling this and the Haslam's decided that they didn't want him. Hart was probably told to keep his mouth shut. STOP BEING A VICTIM. You lead yourself down a primrose path and then got pissed when you found out is wasn't true. If you want to complain, write Jim and Bill a letter and see how that works out for you.

I buy my gas at Pilot, so we can hire the best coaches.

This Gruden stuff is destined to live on like Kennedy assassination conspiracy theories. Our grandchildren will talk about it. Sad, but true.

Agrees. There were posters on here that would have bet their mothers life on Gruden coming here. It was really sad the way people were acting.

I think the point has been lost as usual. The point is that fans have been accustomed to expecting excellence. What in the past 5-7 years could be viewed as excellent? If nothing, then why dont fans have a right to question that? Fans dont want something out of left field, they want what they always had. If your child has always been an A/B student and now they become a C/D student, wouldnt it make sense to wonder whats changed?

Mentioned does not equal hyped up

There was ZERO reaching out to Boosters and all of this was super secret and a complete failure of communication from the PR and marketing department even TODAY

I will tell you that even Dooley's hire was handled better
It's OK ...They think they are going to have their commitment checks by the end of the year? NOT going to happen and then when they are due in March...Then watch Hart freak out and "suddenly' want to reach out to the Boosters

I am a modest 4 figure donor and season ticket holder. I need no answers and am happy with the hire. An experienced HC who has built 2 programs and moved up the ladder after each one. Kind of like how Urban did it and he is somewhat successful correct? Personally I never wanted an NFL announcer with little or no recruiting experience and NO connections. Never thought his 'name' would draw 5 stars alone.

I am fine with the hire too. But he didnt build anything. He maintained what Brian Kelly built......twice. His record is as good as anybody I guess, but he has never had to rebuild......yet.

I never thought we would get Gruden. So, I'm not heart-broken over that.

However, when Arkansas are making serious, public offers to Gruden and Miles and we're making those kinds of offers to the likes of Strong and Gundy, there's a big gap there. Arkansas started off their search going for the best of the best and they ended up with a great young coach who has already had a huge amount of success in a major conference. We ended up with Butch Jones, who may be good or may not be, but whose resume is far less impressive and who any AD could have hired to come here. There's no avoiding the fact that Hart set the sights low to start out and didn't really try for a big name. And that's pretty inexcusable.

Arkansas made a formal offer to both and, according to Hart and Gruden, TN didnt even make an offer. No reasonable person would believe that, but the offer was not formal or public? Why not? That would have killed all these rumors forever. This was our offer and he said no.....end of discussion. The problem is that people think there wasnt an offer because Hart said there wasnt. That really made him look like he didnt try. Thats one reason why fans dont have confidence in him.

In hindsight he should have hired the search firm. They could have handled all this with much better PR results. Only one offer would have officially been made and it would have been accepted. No matter if they hired the same guy, it would have looked better to the public.

My issue isn't with getting turned down. I'm happy to get turned down if you're getting turned down by top coaches. At least it shows me you were really trying. There's no shame for Arkansas to get turned down by Miles. They made a statement that wanted a winner and they were prepared to pay top dollar to get a big time coach. On the other hand, we were making offers to Charlie Strong, which just tells me we're only looking for "good enough." And you can see the results: Arkansas got a super successful coach from a major conference, while we got someone we hope will be able to beat a top 25 team someday.

Agreed. If there had been big time public offers to big time candidates then the fanbase could accept that we made offers and got turned down. As it is, it looks like we just asked big ones and they said no. Asking and putting a real offer on the table with alot of zeroes on it is totally different.

I live in Clemson. Talk about a fan base with expectations. Unreal and a bit absurd. It's everywhere. The media can't be trusted. Ever. They are not your friend and care nothing of your best interest.
