The Dear (deer*) Hunter

My father-in-law swears that flick is the most accurate account of the Vietnam war and its effects on society. I'll disagree, but he lived it.

I do think it's accurate reflection on the war's impact on families or other tight groups of people. I was too young, but not for the family aftermath

Another good movie regarding family impact, but much slower was Gardens of Stone

I know this movie is old, but I'm a yungun and I saw it for the first time recently. It's definitely one of my favorite older movies. The scene where DeNiro and Walken break out of the prison was awesome. Walken's brainwashed Russian roulette scene at the end was also very dramatic. The only thing that irked me was the very end....everyone drinking beer around the breakfast table singing "God Bless America." I couldn't tell if they were being satirical or not.

Please don't take this comment as a slam. If you thought the ending was satirical, then you sorta missed the point of the movie. With the dead and living friends home, they did what they always do--breakfest and beer as family. Life goes on. IMO

My parents might have been some of the least impacted Americans of the Vietnam generation and they saw this movie in the theater and said it bothered them severely for weeks.

my mother will never watch a movie about Vietnam because of the people she knew that went. Kinda like my grandfather won't watch any WW2 movies for longer than a few minutes before turning it off
