The death of a school's tradition?

I know this must bother some guys in Mississippi, but I'd have to think the administration had good reason for what they're doing. Ole Miss can't possibly think all the confederacy stuff looks good for them.

I can't believe we also ended that tradition of slavery. I'm telling you, this generation has no respect for the supreme authority of tradition.

I'm not even referring to this as a pro-slavery thing. It's a name. If that's the case, then the same thing can be said about teams with Indian names.

First, this is all conjecture from a junior at Ole Miss.

Second, what exactly do you think "Rebels" is historically referring to? If you guessed: the states that seceded in order to protect the institution of slavery, you would be correct.

Think about the combination of things a few years ago.
a) Their nickname is the rebels
b) The band frequently played the confederate anthem
c) The fans kept chanting 'The South Shall Rise Again'
d) The fans kept waving rebel flags
e) The KKK keeps protesting all the changes

Would you want that at Tennessee?

I'm just glad Volunteers isn't a Civil War name.

And? It's still their nickname. Good luck banishing all pre-civil war references from the deep south.

Without knowing the exact ratio, I think it's safe to assume that black football players are the majority on most SEC football teams, Ole Miss included. That said; if they don't have a problem suiting up for Ole Miss knowing the history of the nickname, I'm perplexed as to why anyone else would have a problem with it.

That said, if the administration at the University of Mississippi wants to distance themselves from that shameful period, I'm perplexed as to why anyone else would have a problem with it.

It would have been awesome if they had gotten to use Ackbar as their mascot and then changed their school logo to this.

This. A million times, THIS. If I were black, I wouldn't play for Ole Miss. Anymore than I'd play for the Berlin Third Reich if I were a Jew.

Jack Jackson (from Moss Point MS.) in an interview in 1994 said all the confederate flags was a major reason he did not consider going to O.M. and could not understand why any black players would play at O.M. so it does affect some recruits consideration still wish he had gone to O.M.
