The death of a school's tradition?

Jack Jackson (from Moss Point MS.) in an interview in 1994 said all the confederate flags was a major reason he did not consider going to O.M. and could not understand why any black players would play at O.M. so it does affect some recruits consideration still wish he had gone to O.M.

And for that very reason, between 1992 and 1994, I was cool with Ole Miss staying true to their Confederate roots and indirectly delivering Jack Jackson to Gainesville.

He was a cocky little SOB.

Oh, that may be right.
The next person who makes that asinine comparison should be banned permanently. K is coaching the best players in the world on the largest stage imaginable. He's also representing the entire US. Pearl, on the other hand, is coaching a bunch of scrubs and nobodys in a glorified CYO tournament limited to adherents of a single religion. I bet Tobias Harris is going to commit on the spot when Tanning Bed breaks out his Macaroni Grill Games gold medal.

I cant read this without laughing.

Just curious, do you find the rebel flags, Ole Reb, or the rebel flag to be disrespectful or insulting, personally?

I understand if you'd rather not weigh in.

I know you weren't asking me, but I don't see the name/mascot being as big of a deal. It's the flags, the playing of the confederate anthem, and the chants that I find to be a little weird.

Ya, the line seems to be crossed with the anthem and chats for sure.

The flag thing I think is too far, but I know it doesn't mean the same thing to everybody.

I find Ole Miss and "Rebels" to be harmless.

Agreed, but I also don't blame the school if they did want to distance themselves from all of it.

That's how I feel about it. i find the Ole Miss/Rebels thing to be harmless, but don't blame the admin. one bit.

DarthVisor- should SC be worried? Cock fighting isn't exactly PC either. A name & mascot change might be coming down. Can't offend PETA!

As a black person personally the terms Ole Miss nor Rebels bother me at all. I was really hoping that the Admiral Ackbar thing would work that would have been awesome. The history of the Confederacy should be remembered. Not just by white people but black people too. Just maybe not this way.

One thing to remember; quite another to glorify.

I feel that the Holocaust Museum is a great museum and am glad we have it; I would not advocate for Cambodia to name their national stadium "The Killing Field".

IIRC, they have actually been on us pretty hard before about that. It seems to have died down, but this could bring their case back to life.

Treason is only bad if it is for the wrong reasons; no reason to go renaming the Minutemen, Patriots, etc.
Agreed, but those names aren't referencing the losing side of a war they were fighting against the country they're currently a part of.

Think about the combination of things a few years ago.
a) They nickname is the rebels
b) The band frequently played the confederate anthem
c) The fans kept chanting 'The South Shall Rise Again'
d) The fans kept waving rebel flags
e) The KKK keeps protesting all the changes

Would you want that at Tennessee?

The same type people protest TN because Smokey is a Coon Dog. You can't please everybody! You know its just a student in a costume right? It's not an actual Rebel.
