The Death of Sports Illustrated

Not sure if this is the right spot for this, but it appears the mighty Sports Illustrated is dead. Employees were told today that everyone would be laid off. Evidently SI was bought and the owner licensed it to a second party to produce content and publish. The second party defaulted on payment so the owner revoked the license. Lots of great memories of the Vols in SI in the past.

They didn’t tell employees that everyone would be laid off, only good number of the staff. The article even says SI will continue, and that there are parties interested in purchasing the rights. For those of us who grew up in the 90s and early 00s, that version of SI is dead. But SI as entity will continue.

But we shouldn’t be surprise either way, printed material, like magazines and newspapers, have been dying out for over a decade. It’s sad, but when market trends go one way and you refuse to follow, this is what happens.

My family subscribed to it when I was a kid in the 80's. I remember checking the mail box for it when I would come home from school on Wednesdays. I loved the glossy pictures .... and the swimsuit issues. Kathy Ireland, especially.

I still have the Peerless Price, Peyton Manning and Pat Summitt covers from the 90's, and the commemorative 1998 Championship edition. I even have the claymation one with Peyton wrestling a Gator. It does mark the end of an era. Kinda sad.
My family has the same and it’s signed by Phil and I think either peerless or Tee.

I have a copy of the First Issue (August 16, 1954) on my shelf. The colorful action cover photo is of a night game of the "Milwaukee Braves."Originally, SI covered a wide range of sports and the first article covers track and field. That's followed by great action photos of the Rocky Marciano vs. Ezra Charles fight. There's also a mention of some kid named Arnold Palmer who won the amateur division of the Tam O'Shanter tournament in Chicago. The ads though, especially the car ads, are really fun.

SI was great in every way back in the day.

So much awesome sports content AND the swimsuit edition.

Nowadays, however, get woke - go broke.

DEI mandates can be poison in many cases.
