the Derek Dooley of basketball?

I'm just curious, would most of the people on here be happy if we got the equivalent of Derek Dooley in the basketball world? Somebody who was an assistant coach on a championship basketball team and who has been a head coach at a smaller college program for a few years but hasn't really won much or beaten any big teams. But someone who seems respectful and clean cut and has a southern accent. Would you be happy with a hire like that?

Based on win-loss records alone, probably not. He doesn't necessarily have to have a southern accent, but if he proves to be a good coach who knows how to get players to play hard and play with heart and desire, not to mention being a master at the X's and O's of basketball and doing it with class and integrity like Derek (not saying Bruce was classless or lacked integrity), then I'm all for it.

If we are looking for a Derek Dooley type, it would be Scott Drew. Recruits for overall character, grades are important, and has the coaching lineage.

Not a bad choice.

Smart 53-20
Dooley 23-27

I'm pretty good at math. I think his winning percentage is MUCH better.

Oh, without a doubt. But he also walked in to a much better situation. No comparison is going to be perfect.

My comparison is based on the following:

*Well-respected assistants for champion coaches
*Smart guys, entertaining interviews
*Reached a big milestone for their school in their second year (Sweet Sixteen, bowl game)
*Overall have not outperformed their predecessors (albeit in a small sample size), and are still unproven

Also, regarding the OP, I would not like this hire. We had to go unproven in football. In basketball, we're in a much better situation and have plenty of options.

Awesome, so what makes him a good candidate for this job?

There are lots of things which make him a good candidate; I've suggested a few of them in other threads. However, the above was just a fact given in response to the erroneous comment that Smart's winning percentage was worse than Dooley's.

Ah, so that's what you were on about. I answered an entirely different point. Now let me answer this one. Reading comprehension is your friend.

Having my English degree tucked away somewhere, I feel that I can safely say that reading comprehension wasn't the problem, and that you get a C- for clarity on that original post. :p

I'm standing by this as pretty comprehensible: "Did at least one thing better than the predecessor (Sweet Sixteen, bowl game), but his winning percentage isn't any better (small sample size)."

"better" clearly refers to "the predecessor." Having an English degree doesn't mean you never misread something. Or at least my philosophy M.A. doesn't mean that I never misunderstand an argument. :)

Since you want Dooley so badly, why not hire him as basketball coach?

Paragraph structure with this topic sentence, "I'm not sure that Shaka Smart isn't Derek Dooley" led to the misreading. Still giving you a C. (Didn't you hate teachers that wouldn't listen to reason?) Oh, and 3 hours short of a philosophy degree with the english degree. :neener2:

Well, I can't deny that I could've made it clearer with more time, but I also don't care that much. And I can't bring my other degree into this, because it was in math. :cray:

You don't care that much about a post on a bulletin board? I'm shocked.

Anyhow, back on topic, here's the Derek Dooley of basketball, and from the WAC no less:

marvin menzies of New Mexico State Incomplete listing: actually 16-17 this year.

An unproven coach with a losing record at a crappy school is NOT what I want for UT basketball (or football).
