Setting aside Lane and Hurd for the moment.

I suspected and came across rumors, this year’s team might have or could be blessed with several runners who would or could contribute significantly. Mention of Pickett being fast and somewhat deceptive running style. I always believed that Hill was a slam bam type runner who hit the line hard with a no nonsense style.

I knew Young had served as a runner in spots under the old regime, and got a few looks last year.
He’s smallish but I always felt he was a fearless guy who you had to steel club and sledge hammer him down before you stopped him for sure. However, he was shunted to being a receiver, which I think he was good at. I also think the staff made a mistake of not putting him into games more often than they did. In any case, it’s beginning to look like Devrin the RB is finally being rediscovered. I for one am thrilled about this and hope he’s not under used this season.

Quotations: Scroll down to see it on the site.

Tennessee coach Butch Jones knows he has a good problem on his hands: He has too many options at running back. Seniors Devrin Young and Marlin Lane are working to hold off five-star early enrollee Jalen Hurd. Jones said this week that his backfield has a variety of skill sets, and it’s only a matter of time before someone separates from the pack.

“It is big that we play complementary football, especially at the running back position,” said Jones. “Everyone has a different skill set and now it is our job as coaches to put them in position where they can take advantage and use their individual skill sets to our advantage as a football team. Each of them brings a different dynamic to it. And we welcome two more running backs come June, so we are excited about that position.”

Devrin will be a threat at RB. I don't know his 40 times, but his speed is clear. Bet he bust thru small holes and adjusts quick. One or two missed tackles....and he's picked up 20+ yds.
thx for post

I like Devrin's attitude. He's fearless and seems to go hard every rep both on the field in games and practice.

He's definitely not afraid to take a hit. I remember in 2012 he got a good amount of carries and did pretty well (with the exception of a fumble against MS. State). I also remember him running over that LSU guy back in 2011 that was like twice his size, that was pretty awesome.

I wonder what DY's 10 yard burst time is. By his second or third step it seems like he is at full speed, which would obviously be a great attribute for a back. I'd love to see him get some snaps back there. I don't see how he couldn't get at least 3-4 yards per carry with decent blocking as quick as he is, assuming he has decent blocking.

Bearden! Bearden! Bearden!

I've been hyped up about Devrin when I heard he committed to UT. He's a great kick and punt returner. If he would have stayed healthy, he would have gotten more playing time this year. Glad to see he's back in the mix for RB.

I know the competition is limited, but look how FAST Devrin is running for Bearden.

I really thought he did well against Kentucky in 2013. Then again, it was Kentucky, but he and Dobbs definitely had something good going on there.

Cant wait to see him compliment the option. It should be fun to watch with more work at his more natural position.

And imagine, Scott isn't even on campus yet. If that OL has a hint decency, I say again, Butch will have to just let the Vols be a running rather than a passing team. Right now I seriously question their pass blocking but if they can push, opposition won't stop Scott coming nor Devrin going. Especially after the battering rams of Marlin and Jalen and perhaps Hill as well have beaten them up for 2.5-3 quarters. Summerhill isn't exactly a 90lbs weakling or even Beck may see action. But I really want to see us giving opposition a Devil of a time.

I hope Devrin breaks out this year. I've been waiting for a few years maybe this is the year.

I went to Bearden also, Graduated in 1984. Mr. Cannon was still the electronics teacher. I remember "The Pit" in the middle of school for the Seniors and select Jr's. Now I really am a senior. lol

Pulling for Devrin. I hope he has a great season. He really has given his all for Tennessee.

His career has been modest and that's being kind.. Check the stats

True but that was then, this is now. The Butch has obviously seen something he likes to put the Devil in same sentence as Lane and Hurd.

I love Devrin's elusiveness and potential to break some big gains. But the biggest memory I have of his time at RB so far is how he seems to almost always go down on first contact. Time after time I saw it. The first guy that gets a shot at him brings him down. I know he's not a big guy, but I hope he can somehow improve on that aspect of his game. If he does, then he could really be a weapon at tailback. He's got to get Travis Stephens tough.

we're going to be fine at running back. I remember when Devrin Young came to Kingsport for DB's annual exit from the playoffs. He trashed them

I see some redshirts coming in the spring, Treyvon Paulk with his knee would be better to Redshirt and build his strength before running into College size lineman and backers.

D.Young only issue is he Is fast but not track speed fast, great 20-30 yards but seems to get caught. But lov his effort for Tennessee because he wears the T well.

lol. At least DB made the playoffs.

I played against Young and Bearden when he was a sophomore. My coach always called him "Swervin' Dervin". I can't help but still call him that from time-to-time.
