The difference between the Pac-10 and everybody else.

I attended one of those schools, had a teammate that played basketball at Stanford, a friend that played golf at Northwestern, and a teammate whose brother played at Duke (although "occupied a spot on the roster" might be a better characterization.) I do not know your friends' situations, but from my experience, this was not the case. In fact, based on an unscientific study of Vandy students during my residency, Duke was the most difficult ticket to punch.
Now that I remember it, the friend I had who did get into Duke... Both her parents are alums. So that makes sense. But I don't think Duke is academics-based... It's more like a private club.

Duke is one of the top 10 academic schools in the country every year.

Have Arkansas or Miss State ever been top-tier programs for any extended period of time?
Arkansas in the 60's and 70's was an SWC stalwart. their games with TX were much like today's TN/FL games...big rivalry, both won conf. and national titles...and Ark in the 90's was a bball power...won one NT, played for another.....

now none of it sustained over a lengthy amount of time, but Arkansas has some pretty good tradition in both sports.

Ah. Truth.

I'll be watching the situation at Berkeley very close. An interesting story pointing out just how low a priority football is in the bay area... Strange that there would be such strong tradition there. Elway at Stanford, California was a tremendous program in the early days of college football, not to mention the success of the 49'ers.

college football is just viewed differently in the SEC....across the board, it's the biggest thing going across the entire region.

you have pockets like it in various parts of the country....Nebraska, Oklahoma, TX, Ohio, Western PA, and Michigan....but the large market areas (west coast and Northeast really could care less...it's all pro sports out there).
