The Dow tomorrow: Predictions?

What, exactly, constitutes "nationalization"? Buying stock in the bank? Buying a certain percentage of the bank? Giving them a certain amount under TARP?

nationalization means taking over the company, putting the govt 100% in charge of the day to day business i.e. fannie and freddie. the only logical argument i've heard in favor of this is that the govt could loan to everyone and really get the credit market going.

TARP money is a loan so it's not nationalization. Buying a % or executing warrants is clearly nationalization.

Those are not consistent definitions.

true, but so far they've been fairly hands off.
I think they will remain that way, until someone doesn't pay them off over the five year term of the note. At that point, they might get a bit more touchy about operations.

i worry this mantra of "we gave the banks money to start lending more" might lead to more hands on influence from senor obama. obviously the banks are in far far more trouble than anyone previoulsy thought possible. survival at this point is more important than lending to poor people.

Banks were definitely in some trouble, but I believe they're playing it to the hilt to get all of the money possible in this deal.

What they never mention is the fact that the FDIC has handcuffed them and they haven't made any new loans to generate income for the past 2 years.

Most banks are real property heavy in collateral and the across the board style devaluation of those assets creamed everyone's capital. This new capital from the gov't fixes that to some degree, but won't generate any earning assets for any of them, so their income levels are all going to look hideous.

FUT. suck this AM. they gapped up a little when GE's numbers came out (Div. is safe, for NOW.) but now they are back down. Should be a interesting day.

GE with a PE of 6 and a 9% dividend, wow

Looking at a down 200 day so far, I am praying we get a late rally.

We need an Obama fireside chat this weekend

Wouldn't surprise me if we rally late with shorts covering.

I doubt they want to hold over the weekend.

Is it just me or in the last few years has there been a fairly consistent pattern of Friday DJI rallies foillowed by Monday sell-offs? Not every weekend, mind you, but sure seems to be a repeating theme.
