the dubstep thread

Explain the distinction, please, since I'm new to this.

Deadmau5 tends to be more house, which has more of a walking pace 4/4. Daft Punk is the classic example of house music.

Dubstep explains itself partly in its name, it originated off dub ska which is at a much slower pace than house or trance. The rhythm is a mix of dub ska and drum'n'bass, with most of the emphasis on the heaviest bass possible.

The Deadmau5 video is above, compare with a good example of dubstep (make sure you're listening on speakers or earphones with good bass response):

I don't get it. It rarely has a beat you can follow. It can be fun to listen to, but it's painful when it doesn't follow a logical beat. Does nobody else feel this way? Not really like syncopation or anything, it's way more than that.

Nero, it seems, follows a logical beat most of the time. And they are not bad as far as dubstep goes, IMO.

It's like you can tell 90% of dubstep artists do not come from a musical background and just hopped on a computer one day and started synthesizing. It's fun to listen to under certain circumstances, but if I were just sitting in my living room trying to listen to it, it would drive me crazy.

That Skrillex on pg 1 is exactly what I'm talking about. It follows absolutely no beat. The artist just threw a bunch of garbage against the wall and that's what stuck.

I have heard some dubstep that I like, but that's terrible.

Now bassnectar follows legitimate beats, and it sounds great as far as dubstep goes.

I wanted to see Bassnectar at Bonnaroo, but it conflicted with somebody, can't remember who. I bet it was a helluva show.

I like most types of music, but anything that resembles dubstep/trance/techno is not for me, to each thier own.

Anybody else a fan of dubstep?

I'm not. And I'm basically a closet raver (i.e. I hold down a respectable white collar job, but often slip of to rave fests on the weekends, and check out every electronic act that comes to town. My last fest was Electric Zoo up in NYC, and my next local outing is next month when I'll be seeing Avicii and AVB on consecutive nights. I saw Deadmau5 local a couple weeks ago) and like every other category of EDM besides dubstep.

But I dislike dubstep.

Y'all see the new DJ rankings? House is on top, baby. I was also excited to see Sander Van Doorn moving up the charts...now at #16. My two favs are prolly SVD and Afrojack.

Do you realize how wide of a spectrum there is between dubstep and trance? You basically just said "I hate any music created electronically". This is funny. This excludes "song-based" electronic music (e.g., Passion Pit, Phoenix, Foster the People, Madonna (last 10 years), Cut Copy, LCD Soundsystem, etc.) and a good portion of hip-hop (the influence electronic music has had on hip-hop over the last 2-3 years is undeniable...it seems like every third song features a beat by David Guetta).

So, really, you don't like all types of music at all. Indeed, you like very few types of music at all. Ryan Adams may be the only artist you can listen to at this point. Haha. Luckily for you he puts out an album every 3 weeks. Unluckily for you, 75 percent of all those albums is garbage.

Nice post, buddy.

Just gotta have a decent sound system or pair of earbuds...

That's definitely not the problem. It's too recycled at this point, and it's context-sensitive for me. Like, I'll listen to trance or psychedelic rock when I'm writing. I'll listen to reggae when I'm reading. I'll listen to punk and ska if I'm cleaning. I'll listen to dubstep if I'm ****ed up at a club.

You know.

I personally think the majority of dubstep is unoriginal and snoozeworthy. However, James Blake is pretty solid

Definitely the case with nearly every electronic music genre out there. Any idiot with some pirated music software can go out and make something.

Anyone a Rusko fan?

He's definitely the one who got me interested in dubstep, though not all of it is for me because it sometimes just seems like a bass race.

AVB is awesome live and Afrojack is good too. I want to see Deadmau5 but I've also heard he's kind of a jerk and leaves early sometimes.

All of this is absurd.
