Last night's basketball game was really good and I like the message it sends to other schools when their coaching staffs have to attempt to beat Tennessee.
Illinois more than likely did what they set out to do and that shut down Chaz and ZZ.
They couldn't have anticipated Jordan Gainey, from the bench scoring 23 points. (what opposing team could or would)
Let's say they DID anticipate him? ZZ and Chaz would have risen.
I think it's important to look at the Vols through future opponent's coach's eyes. THEN Vol fans could sit back and enjoy these games while they happen.
What will secure a national championship for THIS Vols team is the depth of the bench and the health and readiness of those players to play well coming off the bench because on ANY team, one or two star players CAN be shut down, but NO team can shut down two stars and a healthy bench.
I'm going to guess the next good team will try to test the top 8 players and let them all get sufficient points, but as a team, not get enough total points for a victory. A team that could do that is going to also need 8 or 9 REALLY good, multi-skilled players and there's maybe two of those kind of teams out there like that this year. It would be a team like Gonzaga was a few years ago and that's a rare level of talent to have on any one team.
I'd love it if Volnation could sit back and enjoy a tight game as it's happening.
