The fallout and effectiveness of Pearl rely upon one thing.

And that one thing is the response of the NCAA to what happened. Nothing else really matters, as the only tool to use against Pearl is the inability to play in a post season tournament or some other probation-related punishment. Beyond that, what happened is of more consequence to fans and sportswriters.

Frankly, this is because recruits won't give a rat's ass about what Pearl did regarding the NCAA. I have a hard time seeing a coach sell a recruit about Pearl's dishonesty by saying that Pearl lied about how many phone calls a he made to recruits. Certainly, the case will be made by coaches, but I have a hard time seeing a 17-18 year old with his own self-interest as paramount really care about phone calls and what was said to NCAA investigators.

Now, if Pearl lied to a recruit, then, yes, he would be up a creek. Lose the ability to showcase yourself on national tv a number of times, yes, a problem. Can't play in the NCAA Tournament? Problem.

Otherwise, the biggest annoyance will certainly be the 5,000 times this episode will be mentioned during UT broadcasts. I'm still getting withdrawal symptoms from the times the January 1st incident was mentioned.

I'd add another thing to that list: the possibility of other major violations being uncovered in this investigation. Otherwise, you're probably right.

The 5-7 people on here that are bashing Pearl for this "heinous act" is going to be really disappointed when he gets off fairly pretty.

Because of the "well documented internet message board rumors" that the NCAA will focus their investigation on, right?

It hurts some, but I agree with the point. It's not the end of the world. It sucks and he appears hypocritical, but anyone who didn't already know that is lost. He'll keep recruiting and tread lightly where the AA is concerned.

That's the main concern. Barring any of that, it was a speed bump.

who is going to be disappointed if our program avoids any real AA beatdown? Don't be silly.

What this boils down to is how harsh will the NCAA be for being misled. If they overlook that, I don't expect much more sanctions. However, based on the last couple of folks who have gone down that route, I can't see them overlooking it.

Exactly. This idiot somehow thinks that other violations being uncovered is just beyond the realm of possibility.

Exactly. I'm not indifferent or not appalled by the lies, but, as I've said before, I just don't care (to an extent). I'm interested in the ability to do his job and not embarass the university. Part two was violated, but I was never under the illusion Pearl was some personification of the wise and moral coach we all aspire to have. Hell, even John Wooden cheated like hell.

I care that the program is on solid footing and, quite frankly, I like that we win a lot and I am being rewarded for supporting such a horrible program for so many years. Pearl has accomplished the success I always wanted in Knoxville and I want him to continue to do so. If he is unable to do that, then he needs to go.

It is because they didn't happen. The Ramar situation, Tyler situation, West situation where all stupid things your boy hat and his entourage came up with because of his "sources."

Interestingly enough, I don't have a dog in the fight. I'm relatively pleased with the actual coaching performance, yet I still refuse to believe a word he says. I don't buy the orangeblood act he puts on, and frankly I get a good laugh at those who do. If he'll lie to the NCAA he will lie to UT fans too.

There's no doubt he loves Tennessee if that's what you are referring to with the "orange blood" comment. If he didn't, he would've left for another job.

You are a fool! Bruce Pearl was forced to lie to the NCAA! He'd never do it again, and how dare ever mention that he might ever, ever, ever lie to Tennessee fans! He's bleeds orange! Just look at the orange blazer he wears!

You should just go and root for Kentucky! I bet you are a closet Cal fan anyway!

*denote massive sarcasm*

translation please.

The guy said in another thread that since there are "well documented message board rumors" that Pearl fixed Ramar's grades so he could get in, paid Tyler to come back, and something dealing with the NCAA that it proves that Pearl has been cheating all along. That is what I was referring to.

I have no idea what this means or what on earth you are trying to get across.

I'll be positively doing back flips if nothing else is found and the 'AA accepts the self-imposed penalties.

That won't change the fact that this whole mess could have EASILY been avoided by Pearl doing the right thing to start with, OR not lying about it. And the fact that he's been so self-righteous for the last 15 or 20 years due to his past really sticks in my craw, personally.

But like I said, I am a Vol basketball fan, so I hope it all blows over and we go back to winning.

He doesn't need to love Tennessee like we fans do and that was never realistic anyway. He probably does love Tennessee for what we've done for him and allowing him the opportunity for the big stage. However, he has no previous ties nor probable interest in anything Tennessee until getting hired. For someone to expect him to love UT like Jed from Soddy-Daisy isn't realistic. Doing his job is realistic.

Prove it. You live with him? You his shrink? You know his favorite toothpaste? You seen his wallpaper on his cell phone? You BFFs?

So now we're questioning his dedication to UT. Have you not seen the support he has shown for women's basketball and he did something a couple of years ago to make people show up for the swimming team or some sport similar to that (can't recall off top of my head). The guy had a chance to go back to Iowa, a school he has been affiliated with or Boston College, where he was an alumni. If you have ever met Bruce Pearl, you know of his love for this University.

If you wondering what you're fantasyland statements were, just read that post. Good Lord.

you didn't answer the question, and I have met the man.

Quick question: You ever bought a Kirby vacuum?

Yep, he's so dedicated to UT that he's managed to disgrace the whole athletic department. I'm so proud of him.
