It was really the only play he had. That kikuyu rough is completely unpredictable and even if he got enough of the ball to get it to the green, no way it was going to hold. Laying up took the water out of play and at least gave him a swing at it.Seemed like a really conservative play by Oosthuizen at the end.
The only way he could have got it close was if he hit a draw up the right side and chased it on. Far too risky coming out of that roughIt was really the only play he had. Agreed. How wide was the window to run it onto the green up the right side? Maybe 20-30 feet? I saw him initially standing there with a long iron and all I could think was "man, that's going to be expensive when he rinses that".The only way he could have got it close was if he hit a draw up the right side and chased it on. Starting to consistently shoot in the 80s. Today I shot an 85 with a couple of birdies. If I could get the doubles off the card, I could break 80.
One of those doubles was due to trying a hero shot. Had 190 yards and tried to draw a 6 iron around a tree and it ended up going straight. Lesson learned: just take your medicine and don’t try to play a shot that only a pro could pull off.
