Not a Dead fan, but got recruited to play bass to do a Dead set. Appreciate their music and was impressed with Phil Lesh's work, but they are as loose as they come.[/QUOTE}
Always been a big fan. Ive always enjoyed the blues, and, despite that not being their go to, it def seems they covered their fair share of old blues riffs through the years...
The Grateful Dead had distinct phases. Some were better than others. Honestly 'The Warlocks' sound was more akin to Rolling Stones than The Dead. Back in the 60's, and, to the 70's (based solely on bootlegged copies of music, as i will not pretend to have been there 👍
, they seemed less apt to go into their musical 'space', a dreamy :30-:45 drum and guitar experiment that lent itself to your labels of drug music.
Personally, ive always enjoyed their music. there really isnt a song that I dont enjoy. The band had some pretty tenured and well respected musicians. But it isnt for everyone. There are other bands of the day who's music I go to quicker these days, because theyre faster. The Hendrix 'Blues' album for instance is a mainstay...but The Dead will always be my fav.
And Jerry was the bluegrass musician. Each Member, with the exception of Bill Kreutzman had solo projects. Jerry Garcia Band, Ratdog, and Music Box are a few. Jerry used to invited bluegrass musicians to his house and jam. Thats how Old and In the Way started. In the bluegrass world that's an allstar cast. You may not like the music. But some darn talented musicians.
