Was this USC defense the best in history? Was it even on par with the 92 Bama D or the 2001 Canes D? Let me know because I don't think they were even on that type of level. And please don't just look at the statistics.

What is the average ranked offenses each team played? That could help solve this debate before it even gets started.

Who do you want as your MLB? Vilma or Rey

What about FS? Mays or Reed

What about D-lineman? Wilfork or anybody USC has

It's not close to me. The talent levels don't even compare. Do you guys think USC could have stopped that O from the 2001 Canes?

Why do some people think numbers are everything?

Because thats the only physical evidence some people can point to and it's really easy to tell at first glance.

Generally, you can tell a lot from them, but there are always some exceptions.

I think SEC offenses and Defenses would destroy a lot of Pac-10 Os and Ds. Heck the Big-12 south was supposed to have the best offense in the land and we saw what happened in the bowl games. Won 1 game and Texas should have lost that.

Competition was probably the main thing when I was talking about exceptions.

I wouldn't say that though. A lot of it is just matchups. Generally, thats where the SEC kills with the speed rushers coming off of the edge on defense. If the other team has a top notch pass protector though that would help even the field...

Overall we probably have the most talent though, so I guess you've got a point.

2001 Miami:

Total D: #6-270.91 yds per game
Rush D: #40-132.73 yds per game
Pass D: #2-138.18 yds per game

Avg Opp Total O Ranking(not including FCS/I-AA): 68.9
Avg Opp Total Rush O(not including FCS/I-AA): 49.6
Avg Opp Total Pass O(not including FCS/I-AA): 75.27

They didn't play the best offenses, but were very talented.

Someone do USC. It took longer than I thought. Honestly to do this right you would have get rankings for:

USC D>>>Avg Opp O>>>Their opponents D Rank
MIA D>>>Avg Opp O>>>Their opponents D Rank

To discuss the idea of a Pac-10 defense being the best of all time is blasphemy. Any such person with any such notion should be hanged in the public square to serve notice.

Just because ESPN has a love affair with Pete Carroll and the number of draft pics he churns out, means nothing in the scheme of things.

How the hell are you supposed to compare three different defenses spanning 16 years and three different conferences if you're not allowed to talk about statistics?

Half the posters on this board were pre-kindergarten in 1992.

Compare the 2001 Canes to the 08 USC D. Who's better? No statistics which D would you want? The Canes backup safety was better than Mays.

What happened to the 1992 Alabama defense? I'm certainly not trying to argue that last year's USC defense was the best ever; I just think the way that you're posing the question is just weird. Why would you deliberately throw out any objective measures that might be used to answer the question?

E.g.: who was better, Bob Gibson in 1968 or Dwight Gooden in 1985? No statistics. They're about the same distance apart as that 92 Alabama D and last year's USC team, so surely you wouldn't need to resort to looking at actual numbers to figure it out, right?

Stats are somewhat misleading. Like the Vols were ranked third in total D for the year. But for some reason I didn't ever think that I was watching the third best D in college football.

Perceptions are influenced by many things. For instance, our completely horrible offense last year surely affected your view of our defense. It is just as reasonable to argue that since our offense couldn't stay on the field, our defense really would have been ranked #1 if they hadn't stayed on the field for so many plays and tired out by the 4th quarter. Stats can be misleading, but the visual evidence can be misleading too.
