The history of Tennessee hoops

From Basilio:

The difference in the the game is very simple ... Lanier and Gainey 0-11 from 3 point range ... Meanwhile Noah and Perry ... TWO FRESHMAN were 5-7 from 3 point land ... Tennessee will never win that game ...

Our stars(seniors) disappear in big games and the opponents regular players step up.

Guess that’s why we’re 20-5 been ranked in top 10 repeatedly over last 5 years.
We lose one game to a top 15 team in a gym where we’ve only won 9 games out of 50 all-time, when we have two players who go cold from three, and you guys act like the program is crumbling. Get a grip.

Yeah it sucks winning 25 games a season and being perpetually in the top 10.

When tournament time comes around a true PG is most definitely needed at some point to get by. But you have your view of what needs fixing and I have mine.
I haven't given a view of what needs to be fixed, but I will if you like. First and foremost, our health and depth. We need to run more. We are better when we move with confidence. I know Barnes pushes for it,😉BUT his insistence on hard, tough defense likely creates too many periods of inconsistency on offense. There's no doubt we get tired legs from playing so hard on D. You know better than me that tired legs create inconsistent shooting, and actually downright bad shooting. That's why it's imperative we shore up our depth

I agree with everything you said. Just add a couple sharp shooters if we could.

Yeah, but that ain't seeing the floor unless they can show some effort on defense. Occasionally we might get someone who is prolific offensively but plays marginal defense. Seems when we get those types, they specifically come here to learn to play tough defense.

Lol! So play defense with 4 and hope the kid not playing defense is not a liability? I'll bet he would be.

Shooters are going to go cold some times. Defense travels more often than not.

Rick Barnes has won 862 games and lost 420 doing it his way. He's had five years out of 38 where he was 500 or lower.

Give me a break!
Out of all those years and wins he has 1 Final Four and 0 championships. Don’t get me wrong, winning is great and I appreciate what he has done in raising the profile of our program. However, defense only gets you so far, in today’s game especially. Sweet 16’s aren’t good enough. Our fans deserve a Final Four or two! If Barnes doesn’t want to adapt more to how the modern game is being played then it’s probably time for him to ride off into the sunset and enjoy his grandkids.

I would love to see us in a FF, but I don't necessarily think I deserve to see one. I want them to win NCs in all sports, and am thankful, because I love them, we have quite a few spread out in our athletic teams. That makes being a fan even better, knowing over the course of time we will compete for them. Our big 4 are doing remarkably well nationally as a group. Our players and coaches deserve it far more than the fan. I'm not saying it isn't deserved when it happens. We basically get what we "deserve".

Why can literally every other team in the country find lethal shooters except us? When's the last time we even recruited a lethal shooter? (Besides DK who I feel we just got lucky with, no one expected that)
Good question. I can’t recall as we’ve always been inconsistent. There were yrs when we got on a run but then went cold with a four min scoring drought.

Once again, nobody is saying the program is crumbling. They are on a message board making common sense posts regarding the lack of shooters on this roster, and yes before.

Nobody said they wanted Barnes fired or said the team stinks. I don’t know why some think it’s a sin to want the program to improve and compete for a natty. That is the standard White has set so why shouldn’t the fans?

This team may or may not got the distance but I doubt it. And Basilio is correct in that we struggle to shoot when the game is on the line vs. elite competition. Stats don’t lie.

So why don’t we run. I read somewhere last nt that Barnes (supposedly) said we fell into KY’s game plan in that we began to run during the last six min of the game. I alway felt transition baskets would favor this team as we wouldn’t rely on outside shooting (half court offense).

Thoughts?

You make a good point in that our intense defense (tired legs) may be the culprit if inconsistent (my words) shooting.

What do you think with Chaz defensive play? I know you disagreed with one of my comments about his inconsistent play .

Btw, I appreciate the dialogue, even if we agree to disagree.

Me too! Thanks!

It's gotten better. I saw him working hard on the defensive end last night. Honestly, his ability to prove himself on that end has probably contributed to his inconsistent shooting in SEC play. Plus, everyone is better than he has played against in the past. It's got to be a tough adjustment. I don't think some fans get that aspect of it, and that is ok. Calling him LAZY is crazy

Yeah, i never thought he was lazy. Many don’t realize that defense requires skill. Gainey gets best off the dribble because he isn’t as quick as his man. There is a rt way to defend off a screen , etc.

Hopefully Chaz will develop more consistency. I won’t go into detail but supposedly he’s been frustrated the past month or so. Idk if this is correct but I don’t think he thought it would be this difficult.
